**Short answer:** If you only need email on your own domain, you do not need Google Workspace. Zoho Mail's free plan, Purelymail at $10 a year, Migadu Micro at $19 a year or iCloud+ from $0.99 a month all give you hello@yourdomain.com for a fraction of Business Starter's $8.40 per user per month (US flexible plan). Pay for Workspace only if you also want Drive, Meet and Docs on one bill.

Every price below was checked on the vendor's own page on 8 Nov 2026. Some vendors only showed us UK prices, and we say so. Advice is ours and marked "Our read".

## TL;DR

- **Baseline:** Google Workspace Business Starter, $8.40/user/month flexible or $84 a year annual (US).
- **Cheapest:** Zoho Mail Forever Free, then Purelymail ($10/yr) and iCloud+ ($0.99/mo).
- **Best for power users:** Fastmail or Migadu. **Privacy first:** Proton or Tuta.
- **Receive only:** Cloudflare Email Routing or ImprovMX Free.
- **Always:** SPF, DKIM and DMARC, plus a separate provider for app emails.

**Disclosure:** ZeroRaised publishes this guide and is a launch site for bootstrapped products. We have no commercial relationship with any provider named here and earn nothing if you sign up.

## Suite or just email?

A one-person company needs an address on its own domain that looks credible on an invoice, an inbox on phone and laptop, and mail that does not land in spam. Shared drives, video calls and admin consoles are what you pay extra for with Workspace.

Our read: decide first whether you want a **suite** or just **email**. Email alone is cheap and competitive. Our [SaaS tech stack for solo founders](https://zeroraised.com/blog/saas-tech-stack-for-solo-founders) shows where it fits alongside hosting, payments and analytics.

## Google Workspace: the baseline

In US dollars, Google lists flexible plan rates of $8.40 per user per month for Business Starter, $16.80 for Standard and $26.40 for Plus, billed "monthly for the number of user accounts you have that month" ([Google flexible plan](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/billing/flexible-plan)). On the annual plan you commit for a year or more, usually upfront; Google's own example prices Business Starter at "$84 USD per license per year" ([Google annual plan](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/billing/annual-fixed-term-plan)).

The pricing page served to us was the UK version: Starter at £5.90 per user per month with a one-year commitment, 30 GB pooled storage per person, a 14-day trial and up to 300 users ([Workspace pricing](https://workspace.google.com/pricing)). Check your own region before buying.

Illustrative maths for one founder: $8.40 x 12 = $100.80 a year flexible, or $84 annual. That is the number to beat.

## The alternatives at a glance

| Provider | Cheapest plan with your domain | Price (as shown) | Notable limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Workspace | Business Starter | $8.40/user/mo flexible; $84/yr annual (US) | 30 GB pooled per user |
| Zoho Mail | Forever Free | $0, up to 5 users | 5 GB/user, 1 domain, no IMAP/POP |
| Zoho Mail | Mail Lite | $1/user/mo, billed yearly | 5 GB/user |
| Purelymail | Simple pricing | $10/yr | Heavy use moves you to advanced pricing |
| Migadu | Micro | $19/yr | 20 outgoing messages per day |
| iCloud+ | 50 GB | $0.99/mo (US) | 5 domains, 10 addresses each |
| Fastmail | Standard | £4.50/user/mo on 12 months (UK page) | Basic plan has no custom domains |
| Proton | Mail Essentials | $6.99/user/mo, billed $83.88/yr | 15 GB/user, 3 domains |
| Tuta | Essential | Price not shown today | 50 GB, 3 domains |
| Hostinger | Starter | $0.39/mo on a 48-month upfront term | Renews at $1.59/mo |

## Zoho Mail: the free option

Zoho's Forever Free plan gives you "Up to 5 users", "5 GB mail storage per user" and "Custom email for one domain", but "IMAP/ POP/ Active Sync not included", so you use Zoho's own web and mobile apps. Mail Lite is $1 per user per month (5 GB) or $1.25 (10 GB), billed yearly with no monthly plan; Mail Premium is $4 with 50 GB ([Zoho Mail pricing](https://www.zoho.com/mail/zohomail-pricing.html)).

Our read: Zoho Free is right when cash is genuinely zero. Move to Mail Lite once you want a desktop client.

## Purelymail and Migadu: cheap mailboxes for mail-client users

**Purelymail** charges "$10 a year" and says "There are no hard limits. Not on users, custom domains, storage, or anything else", though heavy users "may need to switch to advanced pricing" ([Purelymail pricing](https://purelymail.com/pricing)).

**Migadu** prices per account, not per mailbox, which suits founders with several side projects. Micro is "$19 / year" with 5 GB, 200 incoming and 20 outgoing messages per day, and "no enforced restriction of domains number". Mini is $90 a year with 100 outgoing per day ([Migadu pricing](https://www.migadu.com/pricing/)).

Our read: both are lean services for technical users, with no docs suite and DNS you set up yourself. Twenty outgoing messages per day is fine for founder correspondence, not for outreach.

## iCloud+: if you already pay Apple

iCloud+ subscribers can "use up to five custom domains, with up to 10 personalized email addresses per domain" and share a domain with up to five people. It needs two-factor authentication and does not support managed accounts ([Apple: Custom Email Domain](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102540)). US plans start at $0.99 a month for 50 GB ([Apple: iCloud+ plans](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108047)).

Our read: a bargain for an Apple-only founder, but it is tied to your personal Apple Account. If you plan to hire or sell, a business provider is cleaner.

## Fastmail: the polished paid option

Fastmail showed us UK, tax-inclusive prices. Business Standard is £5.40 per user per month, or £54 a year on a 12-month commitment, with 60 GB and custom domains; the cheaper Basic plan says custom domains are "Not supported". There is a free trial of up to 30 days ([Fastmail pricing](https://www.fastmail.com/pricing/)).

Our read: the closest thing to Gmail quality without Google, worth it if email is your main tool.

## Proton and Tuta: privacy first

**Proton Mail Essentials** is $6.99 per user per month, billed $83.88 every 12 months, with 15 GB, 10 addresses per user and 3 custom domains, a 14-day trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee ([Proton business pricing](https://proton.me/business/mail/pricing)). For one person, personal **Mail Plus** supports one custom domain at $3.99 a month, billed $47.88 a year ([Proton Mail pricing](https://proton.me/mail/pricing)).

**Tuta** Essential lists 50 GB, 15 extra addresses and 3 custom domains, but its prices did not render when we checked, so we cannot quote one ([Tuta business](https://tuta.com/business)).

Our read: pick these if encryption matters to you or your customers. Expect some friction with third-party mail clients.

## Hostinger and Microsoft 365

**Hostinger** shows email from $0.39 per mailbox per month, but "All plans are paid upfront" on a 48-month term ($18.72 total), renewing at $1.59 a month for 5 GB ([Hostinger email hosting](https://www.hostinger.com/email-hosting)). The page carried Black Friday banners, so treat it as a promotion.

**Microsoft 365 Business Basic** is the obvious suite alternative, with Outlook, Teams and OneDrive. Microsoft's pages timed out every time we tried on 8 Nov 2026, so we have not quoted a price.

## Forwarding only: receive on your domain

If you just want mail to hello@ to land in an inbox you already have:

- **Cloudflare Email Routing** routes incoming mail "to custom addresses, Workers, or external destinations" and is "Available on Free and Paid plans", with 200 rules per domain and a 25 MiB message limit. Sending to arbitrary recipients needs Email Sending, "Available on Workers Paid plan" ([Cloudflare Email Routing](https://developers.cloudflare.com/email-routing/), [limits](https://developers.cloudflare.com/email-routing/limits/)).
- **ImprovMX** Free covers 1 domain, 25 aliases and "500 emails forwarded per day", with no SMTP sending. Light is $50 a year with 750 SMTP sends a month; Premium is $9 a month ([ImprovMX pricing](https://improvmx.com/pricing/)).

Our read: forwarding is a great pre-launch setup. Once customers write back, budget for a real mailbox or paid sending so you reply from your domain, not a personal address.

## Deliverability: SPF, DKIM and DMARC

Google requires "SPF or DKIM" from all senders and "SPF, DKIM, and DMARC" from bulk senders (more than 5,000 messages per day to Gmail), and asks for spam rates "below 0.30%" ([Google sender guidelines](https://support.google.com/mail/answer/81126)). Yahoo matches: "Implement SPF or DKIM at a minimum", and for bulk senders "Publish a valid DMARC policy with at least p=none" ([Yahoo sender requirements](https://senders.yahooinc.com/best-practices/)).

Our read: you are not a bulk sender, but set up all three anyway.

1. **SPF:** a TXT record at your root domain listing who may send for you. Workspace's is `v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com ~all`, and Google says it "can take up to 48 hours" to work ([Google: set up SPF](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/security/set-up-spf)). Add a transactional provider's include to the same record, not a second SPF record.
2. **DKIM:** generate a key in your provider's dashboard and publish it at a selector such as `google._domainkey`. Google recommends 2048-bit keys where supported ([Google: set up DKIM](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/security/set-up-dkim)).
3. **DMARC:** a TXT record at `_dmarc.yourdomain.com`. Google recommends starting with `p=none`, waiting 48 hours after SPF and DKIM, and sending reports to a dedicated mailbox ([Google: set up DMARC](https://knowledge.workspace.google.com/admin/security/set-up-dmarc)). For example: `v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:dmarc@yourdomain.com`. DMARC tells receivers what to do with mail that fails alignment ([dmarc.org](https://dmarc.org/overview/)).

When reports show only your own services passing, our advice is to tighten to `p=quarantine`, then `p=reject`.

**Aliases:** you do not need a paid mailbox per address. iCloud+ allows 10 addresses per domain and Proton Essentials 10 per user. Create hello@, support@ and billing@, and set your client to reply from the address the mail arrived at.

**Keep app email separate:** password resets and receipts should not go through your mailbox. Migadu Micro would hit its cap on a modest launch, and complaints about automated mail can hurt your own replies. Use a transactional provider, ideally on a subdomain; our [free transactional email API roundup](https://zeroraised.com/blog/free-transactional-email-api) compares free tiers.

## How to migrate off Google Workspace

Our checklist:

1. **Lower the TTL** on MX records a day before switching.
2. **Create mailboxes and aliases** at the new provider and verify the domain.
3. **Copy old mail** with the provider's import tool or an IMAP copy. Export Drive files separately.
4. **Switch MX records** and remove Google's.
5. **Replace SPF and DKIM** with the new provider's values, keeping transactional includes and DMARC at `p=none` while you watch reports.
6. **Update "Sign in with Google" logins** that use your Workspace address, or you may lock yourself out of tools.
7. **Keep Workspace a week or two**, then cancel. On an annual plan, check your commitment end date.
