AppSumo is worth it for a bootstrapped SaaS when serving each extra user costs very little, you have a support plan and an upgrade path, and you want a burst of cash, users and reviews more than you want recurring revenue. It is usually not worth it for AI or storage-heavy products, very early tools that are still changing shape, or solo founders who cannot absorb hundreds of tickets. Founders who published their numbers kept roughly a fifth to two fifths of gross sales, so treat AppSumo as an expensive way to raise money and a fast way to gain users, not as a revenue channel.

## TL;DR

- **The split is less fixed than the headline suggests.** AppSumo's seller page says "Keep 95% of sales from buyers you bring, 70% from buyers we bring." Its own FAQ on the same site, and the binding Payment Policy, say the rate for AppSumo's existing customers is negotiated ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/), [Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)).
- **Cash arrives slowly.** AppSumo pays on a Net 60 end-of-month basis, minus refunds, and most deals carry a 60-day refund window ([Partner payments](https://help.appsumo.com/article/101-partner-payments), [Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)).
- **Founder-reported net is a minority of gross.** Tailride reported $144,028 gross and a $34,933.77 payout, and MySignature reported $138,000 in sales and $46,026 in income ([Tailride](https://tailride.so/blog/we-did-144k-on-appsumo-in-60-days), [MySignature](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/)).
- **"Lifetime" is the product's lifetime, but the obligations are real.** AppSumo's partner terms require responses to support requests within four days, resolution within 14 days, and delivery of features as sold ([AppSumo help: lifetime deal](https://help.appsumo.com/article/34-what-is-a-lifetime-deal), [Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).
- **Usage-heavy products are the danger zone.** Sinosend's founder said storage and egress grew into "hundreds of TBs" after a $110,000 campaign, and recommended a fair use policy before launch ([Sinosend on Indie Hackers](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/the-45k-sugar-rush-what-110k-in-appsumo-gross-revenue-taught-us-0383952b35)).
- **You have cheaper routes.** RocketHub publishes a 70% seller share. A capped lifetime deal on your own site through Paddle or Lemon Squeezy costs 5% plus 50 cents per transaction, and Product Hunt is free ([RocketHub](https://rockethub.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/72000597214-what-portion-of-sales-will-i-as-a-deal-partner-receive-), [Paddle](https://www.paddle.com/pricing), [Lemon Squeezy](https://www.lemonsqueezy.com/pricing), [Product Hunt](https://www.producthunt.com/launch/how-product-hunt-works)).

**Disclosure:** ZeroRaised publishes this guide and is a launch site for bootstrapped products. Facts come from the linked sources as checked on 5 Nov 2026. ZeroRaised has no commercial relationship with AppSumo or any other company named here. Founder figures are self-reported by those founders.

**An AppSumo lifetime deal** is a one-time-payment offer sold through AppSumo's marketplace. The buyer gets the plan and features listed in the deal terms for as long as the product exists, and the seller receives a negotiated share of sales after refunds.

## Is AppSumo worth it? The short verdict

**Yes, usually, if most of these are true:**

- Each extra user costs you cents, not dollars, each month. Examples are scheduling, forms, browser extensions, templates-as-software and simple analytics.
- The product is stable, with working onboarding, docs and a support process. AppSumo lists "No customer support plan" among its rejection reasons ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)).
- You have a paid plan and a natural upgrade path, such as seats, usage credits or add-ons, that lifetime buyers will eventually want.
- You can wait two to three months for cash, because of the Net 60 schedule.
- You want reviews, a backlink and a large user base for feedback, and you value those as much as the money.

**No, usually, if any of these are true:**

- Your costs scale with use: LLM calls, video rendering, storage, email sending, scraping or rank tracking.
- You are pre-product-market fit and expect to change the product heavily. AppSumo's terms forbid removing included features from buyers unless the change applies to all users ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).
- You are a solo founder with a day job and cannot respond to every support request within four days.
- Your plan is to sell the company soon. Any acquirer must assume your AppSumo obligations in writing before closing ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).
- Your existing customers pay monthly and would see the deal and churn to it.

Those lists are our editorial judgement, built on AppSumo's terms and the founder reports below.

## How does AppSumo work for sellers in 2026?

AppSumo is a software marketplace with an email list, an affiliate network and a paid-ads budget. You list a deal, AppSumo handles checkout and refunds, and you deliver access through codes or a licensing integration. Listing is free: AppSumo's help centre says "we have no listing fees or limits on our platform" and that it only takes commissions on sales ([AppSumo seller revenue share](https://help.appsumo.com/article/112-seller-revenue-share)).

### Who gets accepted?

AppSumo's seller page says about 10% of applicants are accepted, and that applications are judged partly on "whether you'll be around in a year" ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)). Its quality standards page describes a 25-point checklist and says "No AI wrappers or early-stage tools". AppSumo also says it verifies identity and reviews runway, revenue model and deal structure ([AppSumo quality standards](https://sell.appsumo.com/p/quality-standards)). An older AppSumo blog post from November 2024 gave a different figure, an acceptance rate of "around 50% from initial leads" ([AppSumo blog, Nov 2024](https://appsumo.com/blog/appsumo-myths)). Treat the newer seller page as current.

### What are Select, LaunchPad and Radar?

AppSumo's buyer guarantee describes three product tiers ([We Got Your Back Guarantee](https://help.appsumo.com/article/698-wegotyourbackguarantee)):

| Tier | How AppSumo describes it | Buyer protection if the product shuts down |
|---|---|---|
| Select | Hand-picked and vetted for usability and functionality | 100% AppSumo credit for Plus members; 50% for non-Plus buyers if within 12 months of purchase |
| LaunchPad | Early traction, lightly vetted | 100% credit for Plus members only |
| Radar | Brand new, scanned for safety, without full vetting | No credit after the refund period |

The seller page calls Select "a premium badge earned by top performing partners". It says Select brings dedicated marketing campaigns, priority placement and higher investment ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)). The tier matters to you as a seller because the Partner Terms make partners reimburse remediation that AppSumo issues under this guarantee ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)). A shutdown can therefore cost you money after the campaign has ended.

### Do you have to offer a lifetime deal?

No. AppSumo's FAQ says lifetime deals are not required, except on AppSumo Radar, which only supports lifetime deals. AppSumo says it also works with annual pricing and other structures ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)).

### What is the revenue share for new vs returning buyers?

This is where the sources disagree, so read them in order of authority.

1. **The seller marketing page** says "Keep 95% of sales from buyers you bring, 70% from buyers we bring." Its "Getting paid" page says you earn 95% from new buyers you bring, "minus a small 5% processing fee", and 70% from returning AppSumo customers ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/), [Getting paid](https://sell.appsumo.com/g/getting-paid)).
2. **The FAQ on the same seller site** says "Revenue share rates are negotiated based on your product category and expected performance" ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)).
3. **The help centre** says AppSumo will "agree on a tailored revenue share" for returning customers, based on campaign performance, application quality and product category ([AppSumo seller revenue share](https://help.appsumo.com/article/112-seller-revenue-share)).
4. **The binding Payment Policy** (updated 21 November 2025) says "Your Revenue Percentage for existing customers will be negotiated with our Business Development team" ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)).

The Partner Terms say the revenue share is set in each partner's Promotion Agreement, and that the Promotion Agreement takes precedence over the general terms ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)). Your signed agreement is the number that counts. Most of a campaign's buyers come from AppSumo's own list, so the returning-buyer rate decides your outcome. AppSumo says about 40% of partner revenue comes from email ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)).

Founders who reported their rate show how wide the range is. Baseline reported a 20% share on a standard campaign and negotiated 40% for a later 30-day extension ([Baseline](https://baseline.is/blog/appsumo-case-study)). Tailride reported a 30% share on Select ([Tailride](https://tailride.so/blog/we-did-144k-on-appsumo-in-60-days)). Kevin Schmidt wrote that his share ranged from "20% to 70%" ([Kevin Schmidt on Indie Hackers](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/my-appsumo-campaign-zero-audience-362-paying-customers-6281b4a990)).

### What deductions come before your share?

The Payment Policy defines Net Revenue as gross sales minus the 10% discount AppSumo gives its AppSumo Plus members, and minus returns. Your share is your Revenue Percentage of that Net Revenue. During promotions such as Sumo Day and Black Friday, AppSumo pays on the discounted "Effective Price" unless you opt out, in which case your Listing Price becomes the Effective Price ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)).

On affiliate income, sources again differ by date. A 2024 AppSumo blog post said every partner receives "100% commission up to $100 for every new buyer they bring in, in addition to their revenue share" ([AppSumo blog, Nov 2024](https://appsumo.com/blog/appsumo-myths)). The newer Payment Policy says AppSumo may reduce Revenue Share payments to offset affiliate payments: "no double dipping!" ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)). Ask the business development team how the two interact before you plan your own promotion around them.

### Pricing rules

AppSumo's "Getting paid" page says your deal price must be lower than your normal price and "the lowest price found anywhere online". For lifetime deals, AppSumo uses 12 months of usage at your lowest available price as the comparison or strikethrough price ([Getting paid](https://sell.appsumo.com/g/getting-paid)). In practice, a product sold at $15 a month shows a strikethrough of $180 next to your deal price.

### Refund window

The Payment Policy says the refund window for all products is 60 days unless stated otherwise, and that lifetime deals have a 60-day refund period beginning on the purchase date. Refunds "may reduce current or future payments" ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)). AppSumo processes refunds itself. Its marketplace refund page says "It is your responsibility as a partner to limit access to users who have refunded your product". It also says to download the CSV of refunded and redeemed codes and revoke refunded codes ([AppSumo marketplace refunds](https://help.appsumo.com/article/102-what-is-appsumo-s-refund-policy-for-marketplace)).

Upgrades restart the clock. AppSumo's licence help page says an upgrade is a new purchase with its own 60-day refund window ([Upgrading or downgrading a licence](https://help.appsumo.com/article/106-upgrading-downgrading-my-license)). On the buyer side, AppSumo reviews accounts with high refund activity and may treat some purchases as final sale ([Understanding refund activity](https://help.appsumo.com/article/996-understanding-refund-activity-on-appsumo)).

### Payout timing

AppSumo's help centre says payments go out "the first week of the month 60-days after the end of the respective month's sales, minus refunds". Its example is a sale on 14 June 2026 paid in the first week of September 2026. Payout timing is the same whether your product is refundable or not, and the Partner Portal can take up to 24 hours to show a sale ([Partner payments](https://help.appsumo.com/article/101-partner-payments)). Payments run through Ramp, by ACH, wire, card where eligible, or international options. Foreign exchange conversion rates and fees may apply, and AppSumo says it never withholds taxes ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)). We found no minimum payout on any AppSumo page.

If you need cash to survive, plan on roughly three months from launch to the first payment.

### What does "lifetime" actually mean?

AppSumo's help centre is blunt: "'Lifetime' means the product's lifetime, not yours. If the product shuts down, the deal ends with it." Buyers get what the deal terms and plan features list. "All future Plan updates" is included only if the terms say so. Features mentioned in Q&A, comments or reviews are "not part of the deal" ([What is a lifetime deal?](https://help.appsumo.com/article/34-what-is-a-lifetime-deal)).

Changes are one-way. If you later improve the deal, existing buyers must be grandfathered into the better terms. If the deal gets worse, buyers keep their original limits ([My deal terms changed](https://help.appsumo.com/article/677-my-deal-terms-changed)).

### The partner obligations most founders skim

The Partner Terms (effective 15 June 2026) contain the clauses that decide whether a deal is safe for a small team ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)):

| Clause | What it requires |
|---|---|
| 5.4.1 Deliver as sold | You cannot remove or degrade included features unless the change applies to all users and is not exclusive to AppSumo customers |
| 5.4.2 Redemption | Buyers get at least 60 days to redeem; keep licensing endpoints or codes working for at least 3 months after you stop selling |
| 5.4.3 Support | Respond to all support requests within four days and resolve them within 14 days |
| 5.4.4 Sunset | If you shut down and launch a substantially similar product within 24 months of AppSumo's last sale, AppSumo buyers must get access on terms at least as favourable |
| 5.4.5 and 5.4.6 | An acquirer must assume the obligations in writing; give 30 days' notice of material changes such as price, features, insolvency or M&A |
| 6.4 Severe Breach | Reparation of 2.0 times your partner payout, reduced by 20% of payout per complete year; breaching support or deliver-as-sold triggers it |

For a solo maker, the four-day support rule and the Severe Breach clause matter most. They turn "I'll answer when I can" into a contractual risk. That is our reading of the terms, not legal advice. Have a lawyer read your Promotion Agreement.

## What is the real maths of an AppSumo lifetime deal?

The headline gross is the least useful number. The figures below are an **illustrative example** built from AppSumo's published deduction rules and assumptions drawn from the founder reports later in this guide. They are not a forecast for your product.

### Illustrative example: the campaign

Assume a $69 single-tier deal and 1,000 codes sold over a 60-day campaign.

| Line | Assumption | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gross sales | 1,000 codes at $69 | $69,000 |
| Refunds | 25%, within the 22% to 48% range founders reported | minus $17,250 |
| Plus member discount | 20% of remaining sales were to Plus members at 10% off ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)) | minus $1,035 |
| Net Revenue | | $50,715 |
| Your share | 30%, the rate Tailride reported for Select | **$15,215** |
| Payment fees | AppSumo processes the payment; FX and transfer fees may apply to your payout | small, varies |

Your take-home is about $15,215, or 22% of the gross. That sits close to Tailride's reported 24% ([Tailride](https://tailride.so/blog/we-did-144k-on-appsumo-in-60-days)). You also now have 750 lifetime users to serve for as long as the product exists.

### Illustrative example: three years of serving those users

Now compare two products with the same campaign result. Assume 65% of the 750 redeemed buyers stay active, matching Sinosend's report that 35% of buyers signed up and never returned ([Sinosend](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/the-45k-sugar-rush-what-110k-in-appsumo-gross-revenue-taught-us-0383952b35)). That gives about 488 active lifetime users.

**Product A, low marginal cost.** A scheduling or forms tool where hosting, email and tooling cost an assumed $0.25 per active user per month.

**Product B, AI-heavy.** The same $0.25 base plus model costs. Assume each active user makes 300 requests a month, each using 2,000 input tokens and 800 output tokens, on gpt-5-mini at $0.25 per million input tokens and $2.00 per million output tokens ([OpenAI API pricing](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/pricing)). That is $0.15 of input and $0.48 of output, or $0.63 a month, for a total of $0.88 per active user per month.

| | Product A (low cost) | Product B (AI-heavy) |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per active user per month | $0.25 | $0.88 |
| 36-month cost for 488 active users | $4,392 | $15,460 |
| Campaign payout | $15,215 | $15,215 |
| Left after 3 years, before support time | **$10,823** | **minus $245** |
| If 10% of users run 10 times the AI usage | n/a | **about minus $10,250** |

Product A keeps most of its payout. Product B spends the whole payout on inference within three years, before a single hour of support. The last row adds 49 power users with nine times more model usage each, which costs about $10,000 more over three years. This is why usage caps matter more than the deal price.

### Illustrative example: support time

MySignature reported more than 1,280 tickets on 2,622 sales, roughly one ticket for every two buyers ([MySignature](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/)). Apply that to our 750 buyers and you get about 375 tickets. At 15 minutes each, that is about 94 hours of support, mostly in the first two months. Price that hour at whatever your time is worth on product work. For a solo founder, it can mean two to three weeks without shipping anything.

### Illustrative example: the same deal on your own site

For contrast, sell a capped lifetime deal at $69 on your own site through a merchant of record. Paddle and Lemon Squeezy both list 5% plus 50 cents per transaction ([Paddle](https://www.paddle.com/pricing), [Lemon Squeezy](https://www.lemonsqueezy.com/pricing)).

| Line | Assumption | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Gross | 200 sales at $69 to your own list and communities | $13,800 |
| Refunds | 10%, set by your own refund policy | minus $1,380 |
| Fees | $3.95 per sale (5% plus 50 cents) on 200 sales | minus $790 |
| **Net** | | **$11,630** |

You keep about 84% of gross, against about 22% on AppSumo. You also serve about a quarter as many lifetime users. What you lose is reach. Two hundred sales from your own audience is a big assumption if you have no audience. Compare processors with the [payment fee calculator](https://zeroraised.com/tools/payment-fee-calculator). The [merchant of record vs payment processor guide](https://zeroraised.com/blog/merchant-of-record-vs-payment-processor) explains why a merchant of record costs more than raw card processing. Stripe's UK page, for example, lists 1.5% plus 20p for standard UK cards ([Stripe pricing](https://stripe.com/pricing)).

## What have founders actually reported?

These figures come from posts written by the founders or teams themselves. They are self-reported, and they come from people who chose to publish. That is a survivorship-biased sample, not a market average.

| Product (author) | Gross sales | Refunds | Reported net to founder | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tailride (Miki Palet), Select, 2025 | $144,028 | 247 of 1,136 codes, about 21.7% | $34,933.77 | [Tailride blog](https://tailride.so/blog/we-did-144k-on-appsumo-in-60-days) |
| MySignature (Vasyl Holiney) | $138,000 | not stated | $46,026 | [MySignature blog](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/) |
| Octolens (Charlotte Schmitt), Select, 2024 | slightly over $200,000 | not stated | closer to $40,000 | [Octolens blog](https://octolens.com/blog/200k-in-60-days-honest-review-of-appsumo-select-for-my-ai-b2b-saas-product-2024) |
| Baseline | over $200,000 | 587 refunds, 1,470 copies kept | $60,569.35 profit | [Baseline blog](https://baseline.is/blog/appsumo-case-study) |
| Sinosend (Rishi U.), 2025 | $110,000 | included in net | $45,000 | [Indie Hackers](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/the-45k-sugar-rush-what-110k-in-appsumo-gross-revenue-taught-us-0383952b35) |
| Kevin Schmidt, $19 deal, 2025 | 507 sold | 145 | $3,209 | [Indie Hackers](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/my-appsumo-campaign-zero-audience-362-paying-customers-6281b4a990) |
| FocusCommit (Tam Nguyen), 2023 | 62 codes, just under $1,000 | 30 | $469 in month one | [Indie Hackers](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-i-boosted-my-startup-s-revenue-by-1000-on-appsumo-6e60827f00) |

### Tailride: a strong Select campaign, run like a launch

Miki Palet reported $144,028 gross over a Select campaign from 28 April to 13 July 2025, with a 30% revenue share and a net payout of $34,933.77. Tiers started at $69, $139, $329 and $479 and rose around day five to $79, $159, $379 and $549. Conversion held at about 5% after the increase. Email drove 45% of gross, affiliates 16%, Google Ads 12% and Meta 2%. The team got 110 public questions. Existing trial users could not link their codes, which created extra support work, and an outage (a Spanish grid failure) knocked out support on day one ([Tailride](https://tailride.so/blog/we-did-144k-on-appsumo-in-60-days)).

### MySignature: worth it, with a tier mistake

Vasyl Holiney reported 2,622 sales, $138,000 in total sales and $46,026 in income, with AppSumo taking about 70%. The team handled more than 1,280 tickets and 240-plus questions, and saw upsells 6 to 9 months later. The main regret was Tier 3 lacking the Gmail tracker. That confused buyers and caused bad reviews and tickets, so the founder recommends giving every plan the same features and varying only credits. They also found the AppSumo deal page outranking their own site for brand searches, and bought brand ads in response. The author still says it was worth it ([MySignature](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/)).

### Octolens: an AI product on Select

Charlotte Schmitt reported slightly over $200,000 in sales within 60 days, net payouts "closer to $40,000", more than 1,000 new users, and Ahrefs domain rating rising from 10 to 23. Her lessons were to negotiate the split harder, set boundaries on feature demands, state the ideal customer in the listing, and test redemption before launch. An early bug made the support load worse. She also noted that accounts could be switched off after six months of inactivity under her deal terms ([Octolens](https://octolens.com/blog/200k-in-60-days-honest-review-of-appsumo-select-for-my-ai-b2b-saas-product-2024)). That inactivity clause is a useful cost control for AI products.

### Baseline: treat lifetime buyers like free users

Baseline reported over $200,000 in sales, $60,569.35 in profit, 1,470 copies kept, 587 refunds and 223 support requests in the first month. Day-one conversion was about 2%, settling near 4%. The team advises treating lifetime buyers like free users and expecting few upgrades. Bundling a second product, an icon manager, doubled the support load without adding sales ([Baseline](https://baseline.is/blog/appsumo-case-study)).

### Sinosend: the infrastructure warning

Rishi U. reported $110,000 gross over six months and $45,000 net after AppSumo's cut and refunds. Storage and egress grew into hundreds of terabytes. Of buyers, 35% signed up and never returned, 45% use it weekly and 20% use it every day. He called the cash a "sugar rush" that made the team complacent. He would not run another lifetime deal now, and the company is moving to subscriptions ([Sinosend](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/the-45k-sugar-rush-what-110k-in-appsumo-gross-revenue-taught-us-0383952b35)).

### Kevin Schmidt and FocusCommit: small deals, high refunds

Kevin Schmidt started with about 20 followers and sold a $19 deal over 4.5 months. He reported 507 sold, 145 refunds, 362 net and a $3,209 payout, or $8.86 per sale. He regrets not negotiating the split and not promoting the deal himself ([Kevin Schmidt](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/my-appsumo-campaign-zero-audience-362-paying-customers-6281b4a990)).

Tam Nguyen sold 62 FocusCommit codes in the first month for just under $1,000, then saw 30 refunded. First-month net was $469. He believes the desktop-download redemption drove refunds, ended the deal, and now sells a limited lifetime deal directly through Paddle ([FocusCommit](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-i-boosted-my-startup-s-revenue-by-1000-on-appsumo-6e60827f00)).

### What the reports have in common

Where founders published both numbers, net payout ran from about 20% (Octolens) to 41% (Sinosend) of gross. Refund rates ran from about 22% (Tailride) to 48% (FocusCommit). Support volume was heavy wherever it was measured, and several founders regretted not negotiating the split. These are patterns in a small, self-selected sample, not benchmarks.

## How heavy is the AppSumo support load?

Heavier than most founders plan for. Beyond MySignature's 1,280-plus tickets and Baseline's 223 requests in month one, Dadan reported more than 1,300 chat conversations, 200-plus scheduled calls and 100-plus unscheduled calls in the first few days of a $430,000 campaign ([Dadan](https://www.dadan.io/blog/how-dadan-became-appsumos-tool-of-the-year)). Tailride logged 110 public questions and Dadan nearly 400 ([Tailride](https://tailride.so/blog/we-did-144k-on-appsumo-in-60-days), [Dadan](https://www.dadan.io/blog/how-dadan-became-appsumos-tool-of-the-year)).

AppSumo itself frames this as normal. A 2024 post quotes its head of business development: "On launch day, you get to see what it looks like to onboard hundreds of customers in real time." The same post says "AppSumo isn't going to save you if you don't have those elements in place", meaning a solid product and a dedicated support team ([AppSumo blog, Nov 2024](https://appsumo.com/blog/appsumo-myths)). Partners are also expected to respond to reviews ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)).

How to keep it survivable:

1. **Write the knowledge base before launch.** MySignature recommends preparing an FAQ, a knowledge base and a public roadmap in advance ([MySignature](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/)).
2. **Answer public questions within a day.** Kevin Schmidt credits this with keeping reviews positive ([Kevin Schmidt](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/my-appsumo-campaign-zero-audience-362-paying-customers-6281b4a990)).
3. **Use a public feature tracker** so the same request is not answered 40 times, which Schmidt also recommends.
4. **Test redemption end to end**, including for users who already have a trial account. Both Tailride and Octolens hit redemption problems early.
5. **Line up backup support** for the first two weeks. In our view it is cheaper than breaching the four-day response rule.

## How should you structure tiers, caps and usage limits?

The deal terms are your only protection, because "deliver as sold" makes them permanent. This is our recommended structure, drawing on the founder lessons above.

**Keep features identical across tiers and vary only quantities.** MySignature's founder learned this the hard way ([MySignature](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/)). Quantity tiers, such as seats, projects, contacts or monthly credits, are easy to explain and easy to support.

**Cap every unit that costs you money.** For AI products, sell monthly credits, not "unlimited generations". For storage products, cap storage and bandwidth. Sinosend's founder recommends putting a fair use policy in place before launch ([Sinosend](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/the-45k-sugar-rush-what-110k-in-appsumo-gross-revenue-taught-us-0383952b35)). Write the policy into the deal terms, because AppSumo says only the deal terms and plan features count ([What is a lifetime deal?](https://help.appsumo.com/article/34-what-is-a-lifetime-deal)).

**Exclude future products explicitly.** Do not promise "all future plan updates" unless you mean it. AppSumo only includes them if the terms say so ([What is a lifetime deal?](https://help.appsumo.com/article/34-what-is-a-lifetime-deal)).

**Decide on stacking deliberately.** Stacking lets buyers buy several codes to unlock a higher plan. It only works with code-based products, it is at the partner's discretion, and checkout has a nine-code limit per transaction ([What is stacking?](https://help.appsumo.com/article/35-what-is-stacking)). CustomerLabs reported that about half its sales came from stackable codes ([CustomerLabs](https://www.customerlabs.com/blog/ultimate-guide-to-appsumo-launch)). Stacking raises order value, but cap the highest stack so one buyer cannot claim agency-scale usage for a one-time fee.

**Add an inactivity clause if your costs justify it.** Octolens's terms let accounts be switched off after six months of inactivity ([Octolens](https://octolens.com/blog/200k-in-60-days-honest-review-of-appsumo-select-for-my-ai-b2b-saas-product-2024)). Whether AppSumo accepts a given clause is decided in your negotiation.

**Name your ideal customer in the listing.** Octolens recommends stating who the product is for. Baseline warns to expect resellers ([Octolens](https://octolens.com/blog/200k-in-60-days-honest-review-of-appsumo-select-for-my-ai-b2b-saas-product-2024), [Baseline](https://baseline.is/blog/appsumo-case-study)). A clear "not for agencies" line, or an agency tier with a real price, cuts refunds and support from mismatched buyers.

**Price from your cost model, not from competitors.** Work out the maximum three-year cost of a fully used top tier and make sure the payout per code covers it with margin. For deeper pricing work, see [how to price a SaaS product](https://zeroraised.com/blog/how-to-price-a-saas-product) and, for credit-based products, [how to price an AI product](https://zeroraised.com/blog/how-to-price-an-ai-product).

## How do you move lifetime deal buyers to paid plans later?

Expect a small conversion rate. CustomerLabs reported that seven months after its deal only about 1% to 2% had upgraded to monthly plans, and that at least 30% of buyers did not use the tool ([CustomerLabs](https://www.customerlabs.com/blog/ultimate-guide-to-appsumo-launch)). Baseline says to expect few upgrades ([Baseline](https://baseline.is/blog/appsumo-case-study)). Upgrades can still come: MySignature saw upsells 6 to 9 months after the campaign. Seodity, which reported over $270,000 in sales in one month, saw new monthly subscribers afterwards but called upselling hard and noted infrastructure costs for inactive users ([MySignature](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/), [Seodity](https://seodity.com/blog/the-appsumo-effect-how-we-made-over-270000-in-one-month)).

Routes that stay within AppSumo's terms, in our view:

1. **Usage top-ups.** If the deal includes a monthly credit allowance, sell extra credits on your own site. AppSumo's refund FAQ says upgrades bought outside AppSumo follow the partner's own refund policy ([Refund FAQ](https://help.appsumo.com/article/32-refund-faq)). Check your Promotion Agreement first, because the Partner Terms also mention an "Add-on Revenue Share" ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).
2. **Seats and team features.** A solo buyer who brings a team is your best upgrade prospect. Make extra seats a paid add-on from day one.
3. **Genuinely new paid add-ons.** New modules not in the deal terms can be sold separately. Do not rebrand the old product to escape the deal: clause 5.4.4 gives AppSumo buyers access to a substantially similar product launched within 24 months ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).
4. **Annual plans for new features, without degrading the old ones.** Clause 5.4.1 blocks removing included features from AppSumo buyers unless the change applies to everyone ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).
5. **Turn buyers into referrers.** AppSumo's blog says its buyers make strong affiliates ([AppSumo blog, Nov 2024](https://appsumo.com/blog/appsumo-myths)). A referral programme on your monthly plans gets value from lifetime users without asking them to pay again.
6. **Ask for reviews at a success moment.** Tailride recommends asking right after the user gets value ([Tailride](https://tailride.so/blog/we-did-144k-on-appsumo-in-60-days)). Good reviews on your own listings help sell the recurring plan.

## What are the alternatives to AppSumo?

Two kinds: other lifetime-deal marketplaces, and launch routes that do not discount your product forever. The table uses only what each platform's own pages say.

| Option | Seller share or cost | Refund window | Payout | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/) | 95% from buyers you bring, 70% from AppSumo buyers on the seller page; negotiated per the [Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy) | 60 days for most deals | Net 60 end of month | About 10% of applicants accepted |
| [RocketHub](https://rockethub.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/72000597214-what-portion-of-sales-will-i-as-a-deal-partner-receive-) | 70% of net sales after refunds and discounts | [30 days](https://rockethub.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/72000597203-what-is-the-refund-period-for-marketplace-deals-) | [Quarterly, $100 minimum](https://rockethub.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/72000597215-when-will-i-receive-payment-for-sales-of-my-product-) | [Free to apply](https://rockethub.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/72000597184-i-want-to-list-my-product-with-you-where-should-i-apply-) |
| [DealMirror](https://dealmirror.com/how-vendorship-works/) | "Up to 70%" on the vendorship page; 50% in the [vendor FAQ](https://dealmirror.com/vendors-frequently-asked-questions/) | [30 days, 60 for Prime members](https://dealmirror.com/faq/) | PayPal, after 60 days | FAQ lists products priced $1 to $50 |
| [Dealify](https://dealify.com/pages/run-a-deal) | No percentage published | 30-day money-back for buyers | Not stated | Lifetime, annual, credit or freebie deals |
| [SaaSMantra](https://saasmantra.com/) | No vendor terms published | Not stated | Not stated | Application form only |
| Your own lifetime deal | 5% plus 50 cents per sale on [Paddle](https://www.paddle.com/pricing) or [Lemon Squeezy](https://www.lemonsqueezy.com/pricing) | You set it | Per your provider | You keep the customer relationship and the cap |
| [Product Hunt](https://www.producthunt.com/launch/how-product-hunt-works) | Free | n/a | n/a | No discount required |

Two notes. **PitchGround** is no longer a lifetime-deal marketplace. Its own site now describes "A pay-to-rank leaderboard for products", where you outbid the current holder for the top spot, so do not plan an LTD around it ([PitchGround](https://pitchground.com/about)). **DealMirror's** two pages disagree on its share, so get the number in writing before you list.

### When a non-marketplace route is better

**A capped lifetime deal on your own site** suits founders with any audience at all: a newsletter, a community or existing free users. FocusCommit's founder moved to this model after leaving AppSumo ([FocusCommit](https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-i-boosted-my-startup-s-revenue-by-1000-on-appsumo-6e60827f00)). Cap the number sold, say the first 100 or 200 buyers, publish the usage limits, and close it on a date. Remember that AppSumo requires its deal to be the lowest price online ([Getting paid](https://sell.appsumo.com/g/getting-paid)). Running your own cheaper deal at the same time as an AppSumo campaign is not an option.

**Product Hunt** costs nothing and asks for no discount, but it delivers attention, not guaranteed revenue ([How Product Hunt works](https://www.producthunt.com/launch/how-product-hunt-works)). Our [Is Product Hunt worth it?](https://zeroraised.com/blog/is-product-hunt-worth-it) guide covers when that trade is good.

**Launch directories and communities** are slower, but they compound and do not create permanent liabilities. Browse the [launch sites list](https://zeroraised.com/launch-sites), and see [where to launch a SaaS](https://zeroraised.com/blog/where-to-launch-a-saas) for a stage-by-stage plan. If you want a broader view of selling models, including one-time licences, subscriptions and marketplaces, read [how to sell software online](https://zeroraised.com/blog/how-to-sell-software-online).

A sensible sequence for many bootstrapped products, in our view: launch on free directories and Product Hunt first, sell a small capped deal to your own early audience, and consider AppSumo once the product is stable and your cost per user is known.

## Pre-launch checklist for an AppSumo deal

Work through this before you sign the Promotion Agreement. For the general launch list, see the [product launch checklist for bootstrapped makers](https://zeroraised.com/blog/product-launch-checklist-for-bootstrapped-makers).

**Money**
- [ ] Get the revenue share for AppSumo-sourced buyers in writing, and negotiate it. Baseline moved from 20% to 40% on an extension ([Baseline](https://baseline.is/blog/appsumo-case-study)).
- [ ] Ask how affiliate commissions interact with your revenue share ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)).
- [ ] Decide whether to opt out of promotional pricing events ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)).
- [ ] Model cash flow with Net 60 payouts and refunds deducted ([Partner payments](https://help.appsumo.com/article/101-partner-payments)).
- [ ] Complete tax forms and Ramp banking verification early ([Payment Policy](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/payment-policy)).

**Cost protection**
- [ ] Calculate the 36-month cost of a fully used top tier.
- [ ] Cap every metered resource: credits, storage, seats, projects.
- [ ] Write a fair use policy and inactivity rules into the deal terms.
- [ ] Set the maximum stack and decide whether stacking is allowed at all.
- [ ] Exclude future products and add-ons unless you intend to include them.

**Product and support**
- [ ] Test code redemption for new users and for existing trial users.
- [ ] Build refund revocation from AppSumo's CSV export ([AppSumo marketplace refunds](https://help.appsumo.com/article/102-what-is-appsumo-s-refund-policy-for-marketplace)).
- [ ] Publish a knowledge base, FAQ and public roadmap.
- [ ] Staff support to meet the four-day response and 14-day resolution rules ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).
- [ ] Load-test for launch-day traffic, and have an outage plan.

**Positioning**
- [ ] Use identical features across tiers, varying only quantities.
- [ ] State who the product is for and who it is not for.
- [ ] Plan brand search protection, because your deal page may outrank your site ([MySignature](https://mysignature.io/blog/appsumo-launch/)).
- [ ] Prepare an email to your own list, since buyers you bring earn the higher rate ([Sell on AppSumo](https://sell.appsumo.com/)).
- [ ] Decide how and when you will ask lifetime buyers for reviews and referrals.

**Exit**
- [ ] Read the sunset, successor and Severe Breach clauses with a lawyer ([Partner Terms](https://appsumo.com/partner-terms/)).

## Decision scorecard: should you launch on AppSumo?

Score each factor 0, 1 or 2. This scorecard is ZeroRaised editorial guidance, not a validated model.

| Factor | 0 points | 1 point | 2 points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marginal cost per active user | Over $1 a month (AI, storage, media) | $0.25 to $1 a month | Under $0.25 a month |
| Product maturity | Still changing core features | Stable core, some gaps | Stable, documented, onboarding tested |
| Support capacity | Solo, part-time | Solo full-time or a helper | Team or dedicated support person |
| Upgrade path | None beyond the deal | Some add-ons possible | Seats, credits or modules clearly sellable |
| Cash need | Need cash within 30 days | Can wait 60 to 90 days | Cash nice to have, not critical |
| Existing audience | None | Small list or community | List that can drive your own buyers |
| Existing subscribers | Many monthly payers who may switch | Some | None or few |

**How to read it:** 11 to 14 points means AppSumo is a reasonable bet, so negotiate hard and cap usage. 7 to 10 points means test a capped deal on your own site or a smaller marketplace first. 0 to 6 points means skip lifetime deals for now and use free launch channels.

## Where ZeroRaised fits

ZeroRaised is a launch directory for products built without institutional VC. It does not replace AppSumo's email list, and it does not ask you to discount your product forever. If you are choosing free launch routes before or instead of a lifetime deal, you can [submit your product](https://zeroraised.com/submit) for free. A listing is one more place for bootstrapped founders and buyers to find you. We make no promise of traffic or sales.

To get new guides like this one, including the maths and sourced founder numbers, [join the ZeroRaised newsletter](https://zeroraised.com/newsletter).

## Frequently asked questions

### Is AppSumo worth it for a SaaS founder?

It can be, if your cost per user is low, you can handle a large support load and you want cash, users and reviews quickly. Founders who published results kept roughly 20% to 41% of gross sales, so it is a costly way to raise money and a strong way to gain users.

### How much does AppSumo take from a lifetime deal?

AppSumo's seller page says partners keep 95% of sales from buyers they bring, minus a 5% processing fee, and 70% from buyers AppSumo brings. Its FAQ and Payment Policy say the rate for AppSumo's existing customers is negotiated. Founders publicly reported keeping between 20% and 41% of their deal's total.

### When does AppSumo pay sellers?

AppSumo pays on a Net 60 end-of-month basis, minus refunds. Its help page says a sale on 14 June 2026 would be paid in the first week of September 2026.

### What does lifetime mean on AppSumo?

AppSumo's help centre says lifetime means the product's lifetime, not the buyer's. Buyers get the plan and features listed in the deal terms; if the product shuts down, the deal ends with it.

### What are the alternatives to launching on AppSumo?

Other deal marketplaces include RocketHub (70% of net sales, quarterly payouts) and DealMirror (50% to 70%, PayPal payouts after 60 days). Non-marketplace options include a capped lifetime deal on your own site through a merchant of record, Product Hunt, which is free, and launch directories.
