**Short answer:** TikTok marketing for an indie app with no budget means posting short screen-recorded demos, one problem per video, using cleared music and the commercial content disclosure, and tracking installs with App Store Connect campaign links and Google Play referrer links. Judge it on tagged installs, not views.

Platform rules below come from TikTok's, Apple's and Google's own pages, checked on 8 Nov 2026. Advice is marked "Our read".

## TL;DR

- **Account type:** on a Business Account, when you tap Add Sound "you will only see sounds from the Commercial Music Library" ([TikTok](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/how-to-use-the-commercial-music-library)). For an app maker, that is a feature.
- **Disclose:** "When posting content that promotes a brand, product, or service on TikTok, you must turn on the commercial content disclosure setting" ([TikTok](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/how-to-turn-on-the-commercial-content-disclosure-setting-in-tiktok?lang=en)).
- **Formats:** screen-recorded demo, problem then fix, build in public, photo slideshows. Make them in under an hour or you will stop.
- **Measure:** App Store Connect campaign links for iOS ([Apple](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect-analytics/acquisition/campaign-links/)), a URL-encoded UTM referrer for Google Play ([Android Developers](https://developer.android.com/games/playgames/user-acquisition)).
- **Paid is optional:** Promote can send traffic to a website without a pixel ([TikTok](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/how-to-set-up-promote-for-website-visits-and-conversions)). Boost only what already works.

## Why TikTok works for apps (and when it does not)

The clearest indie case we found is David Smith's Widgetsmith. In his own five-year retrospective he opens with "Five years ago, a TikTok video changed my life." The video was not his. Someone told him the app was being mentioned on TikTok, and he found a walkthrough by creator Katarina Mogus that was "going viral at the moment." Support email started arriving "at a rate of several per second", and "Widgetsmith quickly became the #1 App in the App Store, and remarkably stayed there for a couple of weeks." He reports "around 131 million downloads" as of September 2025 ([David Smith](https://www.david-smith.org/blog/2025/09/18/widgetsmith-at-five/)). In 2023 he wrote that "Widgetsmith's growth is entirely down to word-of-mouth sharing" ([David Smith](https://www.david-smith.org/blog/2023/03/08/new-post/)).

Our read: the result was visual, fit in a few seconds of screen, and a creator could explain it without help. If your app produces something people want to show off (a home screen, a photo, a streak), TikTok fits. If it is a B2B dashboard that needs ten minutes of context, long-form video is a better bet; see our [YouTube marketing guide for bootstrapped SaaS](https://zeroraised.com/blog/youtube-marketing-for-bootstrapped-saas).

Follower count is not the bar. RevenueCat's Sub Club write-up with app marketer Joseph Choi is headlined with his line: "With TikTok, good quality content can go viral from scratch" ([RevenueCat](https://www.revenuecat.com/blog/growth/joseph-choi-sub-club-podcast-2024)).

## Step 1: pick the account type

| | Business Account | Personal account |
|---|---|---|
| Sounds in the Add Sound picker | Only the Commercial Music Library | All sounds |
| Commercial sounds | Default | Choose "Commercial Sounds" from the Sounds dropdown |
| Use of commercial sounds | "for organic or paid content" | Same, if you pick them |
| Cost of the library | "free for businesses" | Free |

Source: [TikTok, How to use the Commercial Music Library](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/how-to-use-the-commercial-music-library).

Our read: if the account exists to promote your app, use a Business Account, so you cannot accidentally put a chart song under a promo. Better still, a voiceover explaining the screen is original audio and does more work than music.

**Link in bio.** TikTok's help page on profile website links would not load for us today, so we do not quote its eligibility rules. Check Edit profile in the app. If no website field appears, put the app name on screen and in the caption so people can search the store. When it does, use a tagged link (Step 5).

## Step 2: turn on the disclosure

This applies to your own app, not only to paid creator deals. TikTok's help page says you "must turn on the commercial content disclosure setting" when posting content that promotes a brand, product or service. You turn on **Disclose commercial content**, then choose **Your brand** or **Branded content**. Once saved, it adds a **Commercial content** label to the post, and it will show **Paid partnership** if you are promoting a third party. TikTok also warns: "If you don't display the proper disclosure, your post may be removed or restricted." In the US, the page notes that the FTC's Endorsement Guides apply ([TikTok](https://ads.tiktok.com/resources/help/article/how-to-turn-on-the-commercial-content-disclosure-setting-in-tiktok?lang=en)).

For your own app, pick **Your brand**. A creator you pay to post picks **Branded content** and tags you. On reach, TikTok says labelling a post as a Paid partnership "will not affect the way TikTok recommends content to users" ([TikTok](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/about-the-content-disclosure-setting-for-creators)).

## Step 3: formats that a solo maker can sustain

Our read: pick formats you can make in under an hour on your phone.

| Format | What it looks like | Best for | Time to make |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen-recorded demo | Phone screen recording plus voiceover: "Here is how I plan a week in 20 seconds" | Utility, productivity, widgets, photo apps | 20 to 40 min |
| Problem then fix | Show the annoying old way for 3 seconds, then the app doing it | Any app with a clear before/after | 30 to 60 min |
| Build in public | You at your desk: "Day 40 of building an app for X. Today users asked for Y" | Makers comfortable on camera; dev-tool and indie audiences | 15 to 30 min |
| Photo mode slideshow | 5 to 8 screenshots with large text, swiped like a carousel | Lists, tips, templates, "5 settings I change on every new iPhone" | 20 min |

Production rules we follow: put the key line in large on-screen text so it reads on mute, zoom the recording so the tap that matters fills the frame, show one idea per video, and use believable data rather than lorem ipsum. Demos and slideshows work fine without your face.

## Step 4: write the hook first

The first line, spoken and on screen, decides whether anyone sees the rest. Our read on hook patterns that suit apps, with examples for a fictional habit tracker:

1. **Name the viewer:** "If you keep restarting the same habit every Monday, watch this."
2. **Show the result first:** open on the finished home screen, then rewind to how it was made.
3. **Contrarian claim you can back up:** "Streaks are why your habits fail. Here is what I built instead."
4. **Specific number from your own use:** "I have opened this app every morning for 90 days" (only if true).
5. **The build-in-public question:** "My users asked for one feature 40 times. Should I build it?"

Write five hooks per idea, film the best two, and reuse demos with new hooks. Never promise what the app does not do: misleading hooks bring installs that churn on day one.

## Step 5: measure installs, not views

Our read: TikTok's own analytics tell you which videos hold attention, not which ones made someone install. For that, use the stores' own attribution.

### iOS: App Store Connect campaign links

Apple lets you create campaign links in App Store Connect under **Apps > Analytics > Acquisition > Campaigns**. A link looks like this ([Apple](https://developer.apple.com/help/app-store-connect-analytics/acquisition/campaign-links/)):

- **pt** is your provider token. It "stays the same across all your campaigns".
- **ct** is the campaign token, and "Your campaign name is your campaign token." Up to 30 alphanumeric characters and spaces.
- Data appears "if the metric meets a minimum threshold of 5 in the date range selected", and campaigns show up only after 24 hours.
- If someone taps more than one campaign link, "only the most recent link receives credit."
- The Campaigns tab only appears once your app has analytics data, so you cannot set this up before launch. Our [App Store launch guide](https://zeroraised.com/blog/how-to-launch-an-app-on-the-app-store) covers getting to that point.

Apple tracks "the impressions, product page views, downloads, usage, sales, and subscriptions tied to each campaign token." Use readable tokens, such as `tiktok-bio`, `tiktok-demo-widgets`, `tiktok-creator-anna`.

### Android: Google Play referrer with UTM values

Google's Android docs show a Play link with a referrer parameter carrying URL-encoded UTM values ([Android Developers](https://developer.android.com/games/playgames/user-acquisition)):

"The referrer string must be URL encoded, 512 characters or less." Set `utm_source=tiktok` and a `utm_campaign` per video or creator. Play Console's **UTM source** and **UTM campaign** dimensions report these for "deep links to your store listing" when traffic source is filtered by ads and referrals; small values roll into "Other" ([Play Console Help](https://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/answer/9859173)).

### One link, one scorecard

Our read: point your single profile link at a page on your own site (`yourapp.com/tiktok`) with two buttons, one carrying the Apple campaign link and one the Play referrer link. Then keep a weekly sheet: videos posted, best video's views, iOS installs from `ct=tiktok-*`, Android installs from `utm_source=tiktok`, paid conversions.

Illustrative example, not real data: 4 videos in a week, 45 iOS and 20 Android tagged installs, roughly four hours of work for 65 installs. Compare that with your other channels in our list of [free marketing channels for bootstrapped makers](https://zeroraised.com/blog/free-marketing-channels-for-bootstrapped-makers).

## Step 6: a posting cadence you can keep

TikTok's help pages we checked do not prescribe a posting frequency, so the following is our read, not a platform rule.

- **Weeks 1 to 2:** three to five videos a week, mixing all four formats.
- **Weeks 3 to 6:** double down on the format and hook that produced installs, not just views.
- **Weeks 7 to 8:** decide. No measurable installs after eight steady weeks means moving the hours elsewhere.

Batch filming helps: record ten demos in one sitting, then add hooks and voiceovers across the week. To schedule posts rather than publish by hand, see our [social media scheduler guide for solo founders](https://zeroraised.com/blog/best-social-media-scheduler-for-solo-founders).

## Step 7: paid boosts, only after organic proof

TikTok describes Promote as "an in-app advertising tool to help you amplify your TikTok videos and LIVEs." You must be at least 18, and goals include Boost account, Get leads and Get sales ([TikTok](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/about-promote-on-tiktok?lang=en)). To send people to your landing page, choose **Get sales**, then **More website visits**, enter the URL, pick a call to action and set budget and duration. A pixel "is not required for using website visits as your goal" ([TikTok](https://ads.tiktok.com/help/article/how-to-set-up-promote-for-website-visits-and-conversions)). Neither page states a minimum budget, so we do not quote one.

Our read: only promote a video that already beat your average organically, point it at the `/tiktok` page, and cap spend at what you would happily lose.

## What not to do

Our read:

- **Buying followers or views.** It inflates numbers you do not decide on and puts the account at risk.
- **Handing your password to growth tools.** Use schedulers with an official integration, not tools that ask for your login.
- **Uncleared music, or skipping the disclosure** because it is "just my own app."
- **Judging the channel on one video**, or posting "We launched!" and nothing else.

## Frequently asked questions

### Should an indie app use a personal or business TikTok account?

Our read: start with a Business Account if every post promotes your app, because TikTok's help page says Business Accounts only see the Commercial Music Library when adding sounds, which keeps you on cleared music by default. A personal account sees all sounds, so it is easier to misuse music that is not cleared for promotion.

### Do I need to label TikToks about my own app as ads?

TikTok says you must turn on the commercial content disclosure setting when posting content that promotes a brand, product or service. For your own app, choose Your brand. TikTok adds a Commercial content label and says posts without proper disclosure may be removed or restricted.

### How do I track app downloads from TikTok?

For iOS, create a campaign link in App Store Connect (Analytics, Acquisition, Campaigns); the ct token names the campaign and data appears once a metric reaches 5 in the date range. For Android, add a URL-encoded referrer of UTM values to your Play link, then view UTM source and campaign in Play Console.

### How often should I post on TikTok for an app?

TikTok's help pages we checked do not set a cadence. Our read: commit to a pace you can keep for eight weeks, such as three to five short demos a week, and judge the channel on installs from your campaign links, not on one video.

### Is TikTok Promote worth it for an indie app?

Only once a post has already done well organically. TikTok's help pages say Promote can drive website visits without a pixel and requires you to be at least 18, but they do not publish a single minimum budget, so check the amount in the app and cap it at what you would spend on a test.
