How to Hire Your First Contractor as a Solo Founder

Hire your first contractor when one repeatable, well-defined task is eating hours you should spend on customers or product. Start with a small paid trial, write a one-page brief, put scope, IP assignment and payment terms in writing, and pick the platform or payment rail by its fees. On today's published prices, Upwork Basic charges clients a 5% fee, Fiverr 5.5%, Contra's Pro plan removes client payment fees, and Deel starts at $49 per contractor per month.

Key takeaways

  • Hire when a specific, repeatable task is costing you hours that should go to customers or product, not when you feel generally busy.
  • Delegate well-defined work with a clear finish line first (design assets, a scoped feature, content edits, QA). Keep sales, pricing, support tone and core product decisions.
  • Client fees checked today: Upwork Basic lists a 5% marketplace fee plus a one-time $0.99 to $14.99 contract initiation fee; Fiverr charges 5.5% plus $3.50 on orders under $200; Contra charges $15 or $29 per payment on its free plan and nothing on Pro ($29/mo).
  • Run a paid trial of a few hours to a week before any ongoing arrangement, and put scope, IP assignment, confidentiality and payment terms in a written contract. Common Paper's Professional Services Agreement is free under CC BY 4.0.
  • Paying abroad directly is cheap: Wise Business is a one-off 50 GBP setup with transfers from 0.24%. Deel adds contracts, invoicing and classification tooling from $49 per contractor per month.

Short answer: Hire your first contractor when one specific, repeatable task is eating hours you should spend on customers or the product, and you can describe the finished result in a paragraph. Start with a small paid trial, write a one-page brief, sign a simple contract covering scope, IP and payment, and choose the platform or payment rail by its fees, which range from roughly 0.24% (a direct Wise transfer) to 5.5% (Fiverr) on today's published prices.

Every fee and price below comes from the vendor's or regulator's own page, checked on 7 Nov 2026. The advice in between is ours and is marked as such.

TL;DR#

  • Signal, not mood. Hire for a named task with a clear definition of done, not because you feel busy.
  • Delegate the bounded work first. Design assets, scoped features, content edits, QA. Keep sales, pricing and product direction.
  • Fees vary a lot. Upwork Basic lists 5% plus a one-time contract initiation fee (Upwork pricing). Fiverr charges 5.5% plus $3.50 under $200 (Fiverr payment terms). Contra Pro removes client payment fees for $29/mo (Contra pricing).
  • Trial before you commit. A paid task of a few hours to a week tells you more than any interview.
  • Paper it. Scope, IP assignment, confidentiality and payment terms in writing. Not legal advice.
  • Pay abroad cheaply. Wise Business is 50 GBP once, then transfers from 0.24% (Wise Business pricing). Deel starts at $49 per contractor per month (Deel pricing).

Disclosure: ZeroRaised is a launch site for bootstrapped products. We have no commercial relationship with Upwork, Fiverr, Contra, Toptal, Wise, Deel or Common Paper and earn nothing if you use them. This is general information, not legal or tax advice.

When to hire: the signals#

Our read: these are the signals worth acting on. One is a hint; two or three together mean it is time.

  1. The same task keeps coming back, and each round takes you a day.
  2. You are the bottleneck on revenue. Customers wait on a feature you can spec but cannot find time to build.
  3. You are slow at it. A designer does in an afternoon what takes you a week.
  4. You can write the brief. If you cannot describe "done" in a paragraph, clarify it yourself first.
  5. You can fund at least two months without relying on next month's sales. See funding a product without venture capital.

A bad reason: offloading work customers value, like answering their emails. If support is overwhelming, fix the system first with how to handle support as a solo founder, then delegate the repetitive tier.

What to delegate first, and what to keep#

Delegate firstKeep for now
Design assets: logo refresh, illustrations, social imagesSales calls and founder-led outreach
A scoped feature, integration or bug backlogPricing and packaging decisions
Landing page or marketing site buildsProduct roadmap and what not to build
Editing and formatting content you draftedThe voice and judgement calls in support
QA passes and test plansAnything touching customer data you cannot audit
Research: competitor lists, lead lists, directory submissionsRelationships with your best customers

Our read: the best first contract has a definite finish line and a result you can check in minutes. "Build a Stripe webhook handler that does X, with tests" is a good first job. "Help with marketing" is not.

Where to find contractors, and what they charge you#

Fees below are what the client pays, as published on 7 Nov 2026. Freelancers often pay their own separate fees, which can affect the rate they quote you.

PlatformClient fee (checked 7 Nov 2026)Notes
Upwork (Basic plan)5% marketplace fee, plus a one-time contract initiation fee of $0.99 to $14.99 per new contractBusiness Plus lists 10%
Fiverr5.5% service fee, plus a $3.50 small order fee on purchases under $200Hourly contracts: 5.5% of the hourly rate plus a $5 order initiation fee
Contra (Free)Client payment fee of $15 per payment under $500, $29 per payment over $500Contra says it is "commission-free for all creatives"
Contra (Pro)No client payment fees$29/mo or $199/yr
Toptal$79 flat monthly subscription fee if you proceed with talent matchingHourly rates are not published; trial period of up to two weeks

Sources: Upwork client pricing and Upwork Business Plus fees; Fiverr payment terms; Contra pricing and Contra payments; Toptal FAQ.

Caveats: an older Upwork support article still describes a Client Marketplace Fee of up to 7.99%, so check the breakdown at checkout. Contra lists card processing at 2.9% + 30¢ per domestic card charge, described as "not charged by Contra", so a processor fee may still apply.

Communities are free. Niche Slack and Discord groups, contributors to open source tools you use, and people already doing good work for similar products often beat a cold marketplace search. No platform fee, but you handle the contract and payment yourself and get no dispute process.

Our read: use a marketplace when you need someone this week and want escrow-style protection; use your network when the work needs market context.

Write a one-page brief#

A good brief does most of the hiring for you. Weak candidates ask nothing; strong ones ask sharp questions. Copy this:

PROJECT: [One-line name]

CONTEXT (3-4 sentences)
What the product is, who uses it, and why this work matters now.

DELIVERABLE
Exactly what you will hand back. Files, formats, repo branch, pages.

DEFINITION OF DONE
- [Checkable criterion 1]
- [Checkable criterion 2]
- [Checkable criterion 3]

OUT OF SCOPE
What you should NOT do, so we avoid scope creep.

INPUTS I WILL PROVIDE
Access, brand files, copy, test accounts, examples I like.

TIMELINE
Start date, check-in date, due date.

BUDGET AND PAYMENT
Fixed fee or hourly cap, currency, payment method, invoice terms.

HOW TO APPLY
Two lines on a similar job you did, a link to it,
and one question you would ask me before starting.

The "one question" line is the most useful filter in the template. It shows whether someone read the brief and thought about the work.

Run a paid trial project#

Before any ongoing arrangement, pay two or three shortlisted people for a small, real slice of the work. Our read on a good trial:

  • Real, not a test. A real bug, one real illustration, one real page. You keep the output.
  • Small. A few hours to a week. Toptal's own model starts engagements with "a trial period of up to two weeks" (Toptal FAQ), which is a sensible upper bound.
  • Paid at their rate. Unpaid "test tasks" put off the best people and are worth less to you.
  • Scored on the same criteria. Quality against the definition of done, communication, questions asked, and whether they hit the date.

Rates: how to sanity-check a quote#

We could not verify a current freelance hourly rate benchmark today, so we do not quote market rates. As an employee anchor, PayScale puts the average US web developer salary at $72,617 in 2026 (PayScale). Arithmetic only: $72,617 / 2,080 hours (40 x 52) is about $34.91 per hour of base salary. Contractors cover their own taxes, equipment, gaps between clients and platform fees, so expect experienced freelancers to quote above that.

Our read: collect three quotes for the same brief. The spread tells you more about your specific job than any average.

Contract basics#

This is not legal advice. Laws differ by country and state, and a lawyer should review anything with real money or IP at stake. A basic contractor agreement should cover:

  1. Scope and deliverables. Attach the brief as a statement of work.
  2. IP assignment. The contractor assigns rights in the deliverables to you. Without this, you may not own the code or designs you paid for.
  3. Confidentiality. What they may not share or reuse.
  4. Payment terms. Fixed fee or hourly rate, invoice schedule, how many days you have to pay, and the currency.
  5. Termination. How either side ends it and what gets paid for work done.

A free, reputable starting point is Common Paper's Professional Services Agreement. The page says its agreements "are free to use and modify under CC BY 4.0". It pairs a cover page and statement of work with standard terms, and its IP clause reads: "Provider assigns all right, title, and interest in the Deliverables (if any) to Customer at the Time of Assignment." It also includes a confidentiality section.

Worker misclassification#

Calling someone a contractor does not make them one. In the US, the IRS says "all information that provides evidence of the degree of control and independence must be considered", grouped into behavioral control, financial control and the type of relationship (IRS). In the UK, HMRC's Check Employment Status for Tax tool "gives HMRC's view of a worker's employment status, based on the information you provide" (GOV.UK).

Our read: the risk grows when a "contractor" works fixed hours, only for you, under your direction, indefinitely. Pay for defined outcomes, let them set their own methods and hours, and get local advice if someone becomes effectively full time.

Paying contractors internationally#

OptionCost (checked 7 Nov 2026)What you get
Marketplace (Upwork, Fiverr, Contra)Platform fees in the table abovePayment, escrow-style protection, disputes
Wise Business, direct transferOne set-up fee of 50 GBP; sending fees "From 0.24%", varying by currencyCheap multi-currency transfers; you handle contracts and paperwork
DeelFrom $49 per contractor per monthPayments in 120+ currencies, automated invoicing, tax form guidance and document collection, worker classification compliance

Sources: Wise Business pricing (GB page), Deel pricing. Deel says its pricing is month-to-month and "You can cancel at any time." Deel also offers a Contractor of Record option from $325 per contractor per month, which is more than most first hires need.

Our read: for one contractor, a direct transfer is cheapest. Deel earns its fee once you have several contractors in different countries.

Onboarding and async management#

  • Day one pack. Brief, revocable least-privilege access, brand files and a short recorded product tour.
  • Written check-ins on agreed days: done, next, blocked. Calls only when stuck.
  • One shared board with owner and status per task.
  • Review fast. Waiting on your feedback is the biggest drag; review within a working day.
  • Offboard cleanly. Revoke access, collect source files, confirm IP assignment and the final invoice.

Bootstrapped budget: a worked example#

Arithmetic only, using hypothetical numbers. Suppose you can spare about $800 a month and hire a contractor for 20 hours a month at a hypothetical $35 per hour. Labour is 20 x $35 = $700 a month.

RouteMonthly mathsMonthly total
Upwork Basic (5%)$700 + $35 fee$735, plus a one-time initiation fee of up to $14.99
Contra Free (one payment over $500)$700 + $29$729
Contra Pro$700 + $29 plan$729 (or $700 + $16.58 if you divide the $199 yearly plan by 12)
Direct via Wise (at the 0.24% floor)$700 + $1.68$701.68, plus a one-off 50 GBP setup
Direct via Deel$700 + $49$749

Add a paid trial first: a fixed $300 trial with two candidates is $600 of labour, plus fees on whichever route you use (on Upwork Basic, 5% of $600 is $30, plus initiation fees).

Our read: at this size the fee difference between routes is under $50 a month. Choose for trust and admin first, price second. Once your revenue grows, as in our guide on getting to $10K MRR, revisit whether more of your hours are worth buying back.

Frequently asked questions#

When should a solo founder hire their first contractor?#

When one specific, repeatable task is consistently taking hours you should be spending on customers, sales or the core product, and you can describe the finished result in a paragraph. If you cannot write a clear brief for the work, you are not ready to hand it off yet.

What should I outsource first as a solo founder?#

Work with a clear definition of done that does not need your judgement on every decision: design assets, a scoped feature or integration, landing page builds, content editing, QA passes, bookkeeping prep or research. Keep sales conversations, pricing, product direction and the voice of your customer support yourself, at least at first.

How much does Upwork, Fiverr or Contra charge clients?#

As checked on 7 Nov 2026: Upwork's client pricing page lists a 5% marketplace fee on the Basic plan plus a one-time $0.99 to $14.99 contract initiation fee, and 10% on Business Plus. Fiverr's payment terms list a 5.5% service fee plus a $3.50 small order fee on purchases under $200. Contra's free plan charges a client payment fee of $15 or $29 per payment, while Contra Pro ($29/mo or $199/yr) has no fees. Toptal lists a $79 monthly subscription fee if you proceed with talent matching.

Do I need a contract with a freelancer?#

Yes. At minimum, put the scope, deliverables, payment terms, IP assignment and confidentiality in writing before work starts. Common Paper's Professional Services Agreement is free to use and modify under CC BY 4.0 and includes an IP assignment clause and confidentiality terms. This is not legal advice, so have a lawyer review anything high stakes.

What is the cheapest way to pay an international contractor?#

Paying directly by bank transfer through a service like Wise Business is usually the cheapest rail: Wise lists a one-off 50 GBP setup fee and sending fees from 0.24%, varying by currency. Deel costs more, from $49 per contractor per month, but adds contracts, automated invoicing, tax form collection and worker classification tooling.
