What Google Play is#

Google Play is where Android users discover apps and games. Developers publish through Play Console, signing up for a developer account with a Google Account first (Play Console help).

Who it suits#

It suits makers shipping an Android app or game. When you fill in the store listing, Google warns that repetitive or irrelevant keywords in the app name or description can get an app suspended (create and set up your app), so our guide to app store keyword research for indie apps is worth reading first.

How to submit#

Signup steps, per the Play Console account guide:

  1. Sign up for a Play Console developer account with your Google Account. You must be at least 18.
  2. Accept the Google Play Developer Distribution Agreement.
  3. Pay the one-time registration fee by credit or debit card. Prepaid cards are not accepted.
  4. Choose a Personal or Organization account and complete identity verification.
  5. In Play Console, create your app, then fill in its store listing and setup from the app dashboard.
  6. Roll out a release. At the end of the release process, clicking Release also publishes the app.
  • Cost: Paid. A US$25 one-time registration fee, with no free option (Play Console help).
  • Link type: dofollow. On a sampled listing checked on 2026-10-19, the Website link to the product homepage carried no rel attribute, so no nofollow.
  • Review time: For certain developer accounts, Google takes more time and review can run up to seven days, or longer in exceptional cases (publishing docs).

The catch#

New personal accounts face an extra gate. If your personal account was created after November 13, 2023, you must run a closed test with at least 12 testers who stay opted in for 14 days in a row before you can apply for production access (testing requirements). Google reviews that application too, usually in seven days or less, so plan for at least 14 days of testing plus that review before a public release. Also note that if the government ID or card you provide is found invalid, the registration fee is not refunded (Play Console help). More places to list are on our launch sites page.
