Best Knowledge Base Software for Bootstrapped SaaS (2026)

Most bootstrapped SaaS founders can run a help center for $0. Help Scout Free gives you a Docs site with up to 10 articles, Mintlify Starter is free with a custom domain for up to 5 editors, and Docusaurus is MIT-licensed and free to self-host. Pay only when you need more articles, AI answers or a help center tied to live chat.

Key takeaways

  • Help Scout Free includes 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site, but caps articles at 10; paid plans start at $25 per user a month with unlimited articles.
  • Mintlify Starter is $0 for up to 5 editor seats and includes a custom domain; Pro is $450/mo billed annually, so most small teams stay on Starter.
  • GitBook is free for one user, but a custom domain needs Essential at $65 per site a month billed annually, plus $12 per user.
  • Docusaurus is MIT-licensed and free, and Algolia DocSearch is free for open source and technical docs if you keep the Algolia logo.
  • If you want your docs in a subfolder like yoursite.com/help, check support before you buy: Help Scout Docs only supports a custom subdomain, while Intercom supports subpaths.

Short answer: Start on a free plan. Help Scout Free gives you a hosted Docs site next to your support inbox, Mintlify Starter gives you a polished docs site with a custom domain for $0, and Docusaurus is free if you would rather keep docs in your repo. Pay for a knowledge base only when you outgrow 10 articles, want AI answers, or need the help center inside your chat widget.

TL;DR#

  • Best free hosted option: Help Scout Free, with 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site, capped at 10 articles (Help Scout pricing).
  • Best free developer docs: Mintlify Starter, $0 for up to 5 editor seats, custom domain included (Mintlify pricing).
  • Best fully free and open source: Docusaurus, MIT-licensed (Docusaurus on GitHub).
  • Best if you already sell with live chat: Crisp, whose knowledge base comes with the Essentials plan at $95 a month per workspace (Crisp pricing).
  • Watch the custom domain line. GitBook's Free plan has no custom domain, Notion charges a per-domain add-on, and Help Scout supports a custom subdomain but not a subfolder.

When a bootstrapped SaaS needs a knowledge base#

Our guide on how to handle support as a solo founder covers the habit that feeds a knowledge base: saved replies that keep getting sent become help articles. This post is only about where those articles live.

Our read: it is time when you link the same answer more than once a week, when you have setup steps that need screenshots, or when you are about to launch and expect a burst of questions (add it to your product launch checklist). Before that, a single FAQ page is fine.

The tools, one by one#

Help Scout Docs: best free start for email support#

Help Scout's Free plan "includes 5 users, 1 Inbox, and 1 Docs site", but the article count on Free is 10. Paid plans start with Standard at $25 per user a month, then Plus at $45 and Pro at $75, and all paid plans get unlimited articles. Docs sites go from 2 on Standard to 5 on Pro, with extra sites at $20 a month on annual billing (Help Scout pricing). The pricing page shows a monthly or annual toggle with a 16% annual saving, so confirm which cycle a quoted price applies to when you sign up.

On domains, Help Scout's docs say "There is no additional charge to use a custom domain name with your Docs site", but also "We are only able to support using a custom subdomain with Docs" (Help Scout Docs: custom domain). So help.yoursite.com works, yoursite.com/help does not.

AI answers come from the Envoy chatbot at $0.75 per resolution on paid plans, and the pricing FAQ says new accounts get "3 months of free, unlimited AI Answers resolutions".

Our read: for email-first support this is the default, and ten articles covers setup, billing and your top questions.

Mintlify: best free developer docs#

Mintlify's Starter plan is "$0/mo" for "individuals and small teams" with 5 editor seats, and its comparison table lists a custom domain on Starter. Pro is $450 a month billed annually or $540 billed monthly, with unlimited editors and 10,000 AI credits a month. The AI Assistant, which is not on Starter, costs 25 credits per answer and is free when it cannot answer. Overage is $0.01 per credit. New accounts get a 14-day Pro trial with no card, and qualifying startups can get 50% off Pro for 12 months (Mintlify pricing).

Our read: for an API, SDK or CLI product, Starter is hard to beat. The jump to Pro is steep, so only consider it if the Assistant would replace real support hours.

GitBook: free for one, $65 for a branded site#

GitBook's Free plan is "For individuals" with one user, and a custom domain is "not included in the Free plan; included in the Essential, Ultimate, and Enterprise plans." Essential is $65 per site a month and Ultimate $249 per site a month, plus $12 per user a month, and the page says "All amounts shown are monthly costs under annual billing." Essential includes $20 of AI credits a month, and page views are unlimited on every plan (GitBook pricing).

Our read: for a public help center you need Essential. Example: one site and two editors is $65 + (2 x $12) = $89 a month on annual billing.

Docusaurus: free docs-as-code#

Docusaurus is "MIT licensed", builds Markdown and MDX into "static HTML files ready to be served", and has built-in versioning (Docusaurus, GitHub). For search, Algolia's DocSearch program "is free" but "crawls only documentation pages for open source projects and technical blogs", and you must keep the "Search by Algolia" logo next to results (DocSearch).

Our read: if you already deploy a static site, Docusaurus costs an afternoon and can live in a subfolder of your domain. The trade: non-technical teammates cannot easily edit it, and nothing ties it to your inbox.

HelpDocs: a dedicated help center, no free plan#

HelpDocs has no free plan; every plan starts with a 14-day trial with no card. Sprout is $129 a month billed monthly or $99 billed annually, with 5 editors, unlimited articles and unlimited public viewers. Every plan includes HelpDocs AI credits, 1,000 a month on Sprout. Startups under three years old with five or fewer employees can get "50% off any plan for two years" (HelpDocs pricing). Custom domain and SSL appear under Hosting in the comparison table; check the plan column on the page before buying.

Our read: $99 a month is a lot for a pre-revenue help center when free tiers exist elsewhere.

Crisp: knowledge base bundled with live chat#

Crisp prices "per month, per workspace", not per seat. The Free plan has no knowledge base. Crisp's help docs say "The Knowledge Base feature is available on Crisp Essentials and Crisp Plus plans", and Essentials is $95 a month (Crisp pricing, Crisp Knowledge Base guide). You can set a custom domain in the knowledge base settings (Crisp custom domain guide). Essentials includes $25 of AI credits, which Crisp says is "Around 450 automated conversations". There is a 14-day trial of any plan with no card.

Our read: pick Crisp if live chat is how you sell. For docs alone, $95 a month is a lot.

Intercom Articles: AI answers first#

Intercom has no free plan, only a 14-day trial. The Essential plan shows $29 per seat a month, displayed at $19 with "New customers save 35%", and includes a "Public help center". Fin, its AI agent, is "priced at $0.99 per outcome" (Intercom pricing). Intercom's help docs say "Both subdomains (e.g. help.exampleapp.io) and subpaths (e.g. exampleapp.io/help) are supported" for custom help center domains (Intercom: custom domain).

Our read: worth it once paying per resolved conversation is cheaper than your time, which for most solo founders comes later.

Notion: fine as a stopgap#

Notion's Free plan lets you "Claim one notion.site domain". Using your own domain needs a paid plan plus the custom domain add-on: "an additional $10 per month", or $8 a month with annual billing (Notion Sites availability and pricing).

Our read: fine for a beta; move once you want search or an in-app widget.

Document360 publishes no plan prices; its page says pricing is "built around your needs" (Document360 pricing), so we left it out of the detailed picks.

Docs-as-code vs a hosted help center#

Hosted tools (Help Scout, HelpDocs, Crisp, Intercom, Notion) let anyone edit in a browser and connect articles to your inbox or chat widget, but you accept the vendor's domain options. Docs-as-code (Docusaurus and other static site generators) keeps docs in your repo, reviewed in pull requests and shipped with releases, which pairs well with writing release notes in the same place.

Our read: if the person answering support also writes the code, docs-as-code keeps docs current. If you plan to hand support to a contractor, pick a hosted tool so they can fix an article without a pull request.

SEO for help docs: domain choices that matter#

Help articles answer "how do I" searches from people close to buying. Our read:

  1. Use your own domain. A vendor subdomain builds up the vendor's site, not yours. GitBook needs Essential and Notion a paid add-on for this.
  2. Subfolder or subdomain. A subfolder (yoursite.com/help) keeps docs under one site with your blog; a subdomain (help.yoursite.com) is simpler. Both can rank. For a subfolder, use Intercom (subpaths supported) or a self-deployed Docusaurus site; Help Scout Docs cannot do it.
  3. Title articles as questions. "How to connect Stripe" beats "Integrations overview".

AI answers: worth it yet?#

AI answers are priced per resolution or per credit (prices above). Example, our arithmetic: 100 resolved conversations a month costs $75 on Help Scout Envoy and $99 on Intercom Fin at listed rates. That is cheap if each would have taken you ten minutes, but a bot is only as good as your articles, so write the docs first.

Frequently asked questions#

What is the best free knowledge base software for a SaaS startup?#

For a hosted help center, Help Scout Free (1 Docs site, up to 10 articles) and Mintlify Starter (free for up to 5 editors, custom domain included) are the strongest free options we checked on 8 Nov 2026. If you are comfortable with code and hosting, Docusaurus is MIT-licensed and free, with no article or seat limits.

Do I need a knowledge base before launch?#

Not a full one. Our read: write five to ten articles that answer setup, billing and the questions beta users already asked, link them from the app, and add more each time you answer the same question twice. That fits inside Help Scout Free's 10-article limit.

Should my help docs live on a subdomain or a subfolder?#

Both work. Our read is that a subfolder such as yoursite.com/help keeps everything under one site, but it needs a tool that supports it (Intercom says it supports subpaths; Help Scout Docs supports only a custom subdomain) or a docs-as-code setup you deploy yourself. A subdomain like help.yoursite.com is easier and fine for most small SaaS products.

Which knowledge base tools have AI answers?#

On 8 Nov 2026: Help Scout's Envoy chatbot costs $0.75 per resolution on paid plans, Intercom's Fin is from $0.99 per outcome, GitBook includes AI credits on Essential and Ultimate, Mintlify Pro includes 10,000 credits a month with answers at 25 credits each, HelpDocs includes AI credits on every plan, and Crisp includes AI credits from $5 on Mini to $75 on Plus.

Can I use Notion as a knowledge base?#

Yes, for a very early product. Notion's Free plan lets you claim one notion.site domain. A custom domain needs a paid Notion plan plus the custom domain add-on, which Notion lists at $8 a month per domain billed annually or $10 billed monthly. It lacks help-center features like article feedback and in-app search widgets.
