Zapier Alternatives for Indie Makers: 7 Cheaper Picks (2026)

Zapier's free plan gives you 100 tasks a month and two-step Zaps only, and its entry Professional tier is $19.99/mo billed yearly. Make starts at $9/mo for 10,000 credits, n8n Cloud counts a whole workflow run as one execution, Activepieces charges one credit per run and is MIT-licensed at its core, and Pabbly sells a lifetime plan. For three typical indie automations, the cheapest hosted option costs less than half of Zapier, and self-hosting can cost you nothing but a server and your time.

Key takeaways

  • Zapier Free is 100 tasks a month with two-step Zaps only. Professional starts at 750 tasks for $19.99/mo billed yearly or $29.99/mo monthly, and triggers never use tasks.
  • Make's cheapest paid plan is $9/mo on annual billing for 10,000 credits, but every module run counts, including the trigger and each polling check.
  • n8n and Activepieces bill per workflow run, not per step, which makes multi-step automations far cheaper. n8n Starter is 20 EUR/mo billed annually for 2.5K executions; Activepieces Plus is $20/mo for 10,000 credits.
  • Self-hosting n8n Community Edition is free, but its Sustainable Use License limits use to your own internal business purposes or non-commercial use.
  • Pipedream says Workflows are in maintenance mode, closed to new signups, and shutting down on March 31, 2027. Do not start new automations there.

Short answer: If you want the cheapest hosted Zapier alternative, start with Make at $9/mo for 10,000 credits. If your automations have many steps, n8n Cloud or Activepieces will be cheaper because they bill per run, not per step. If you can run a server, self-host n8n or Activepieces and pay only for hosting.

Every price and limit below comes from each vendor's own pricing page or docs, checked on 7 Nov 2026. The analysis is ours and is marked as such.

TL;DR#

  • Zapier Free: 100 tasks/mo and two-step Zaps only. Professional: from $19.99/mo billed yearly or $29.99/mo monthly for 750 tasks (Zapier pricing).
  • Make: Free plan with 1,000 credits/mo; paid plans from $9/mo on annual billing for 10,000 credits (Make vs Zapier).
  • n8n: Cloud Starter 20 EUR/mo billed annually for 2.5K executions; self-hosted Community Edition is free under the Sustainable Use License (n8n pricing).
  • Activepieces: Free plan, then Plus at $20 flat per month for 10,000 credits; one run is one credit however many steps it has (Activepieces pricing).
  • Pabbly Connect: Standard from $19/mo, plus one-time lifetime plans from $349 (Pabbly buy page).
  • Pipedream Workflows: shutting down March 31, 2027 and closed to signups (Pipedream docs).

Why indie makers leave Zapier#

Zapier is easy, but its pricing punishes the way small products grow. The Free plan is limited to "Two-step" Zaps, one trigger and one action, with 15-minute polling. Filters, Paths and Formatter are paid features (Zapier pricing).

The entry Professional tier is 750 tasks a month at $19.99/mo billed yearly ($239.88 a year) or $29.99/mo billed monthly. Pay-per-task overage is billed at 2.5x the base rate on monthly plans (Zapier pricing).

To be fair, "Zap triggers never use tasks", and filter, formatter, delay and path steps do not count either. Only successful action steps do (Zapier help).

Tasks vs credits vs executions#

The billing unit decides your bill more than the headline price.

ToolBilling unitDoes the trigger count?Does each step count?
ZapierTaskNoYes, each successful action
Pabbly ConnectTaskNoAction steps only; filters, routers, formatters free
MakeCredit (1 operation = 1 credit for non-AI apps)Yes, including each polling checkYes, each module run, per bundle
n8n CloudExecutionPart of the one executionNo, one run of the whole workflow
ActivepiecesCreditPart of the one creditNo, "A run is one credit however many steps it has"
IFTTTCreditCredits cover Applet runsNot specified on the plans page

Two details matter for Make. First, its help centre says a polling trigger such as "Watch New Rows" uses one operation per check, and one operation equals one credit for non-AI apps (Make operations, Make credits). Second, modules process each bundle separately, so a trigger that returns ten items runs every later module ten times. n8n is the opposite: "An execution is a single run of your entire workflow. It doesn't matter how many steps are in the workflow or how much data it processes" (n8n pricing).

Worked example: three indie automations, priced#

Here is a plausible month for a small SaaS. The volumes are our assumptions, not data; swap in your own.

  1. Stripe sale to Slack and a Google Sheet: 100 sales. Trigger plus 2 actions.
  2. New signup to newsletter: 400 signups. Trigger plus 1 action (add subscriber).
  3. Contact form to CRM: 60 submissions. Trigger plus 1 action (create contact).

We assume instant (webhook) triggers wherever possible, because polling changes the maths on Make.

Zapier (tasks = action steps):

  • Stripe: 100 x 2 = 200 tasks
  • Signup: 400 x 1 = 400 tasks
  • Form: 60 x 1 = 60 tasks
  • Total: 660 tasks. That is over the Free plan's 100, and the Stripe Zap needs multi-step anyway. Professional 750 fits: $19.99/mo yearly or $29.99/mo monthly.

Pabbly Connect (tasks = action steps): the same 660 tasks. Free is 100 tasks, so you need Standard at $19/mo, which includes 10,000 tasks (Pabbly buy page, Pabbly Connect).

Make (credits = every module run, trigger included):

  • Stripe: 100 x 3 modules = 300 credits
  • Signup: 400 x 2 = 800 credits
  • Form: 60 x 2 = 120 credits
  • Total: 1,220 credits. That is just over Free's 1,000, so Core at $9/mo on annual billing for 10,000 credits. If one of those scenarios polled every 15 minutes instead, that is 4 x 24 x 30 = 2,880 checks a month for that scenario alone, before any real work.

n8n Cloud (executions = runs): 100 + 400 + 60 = 560 executions. Starter covers 2.5K at 20 EUR/mo billed annually.

Activepieces (credits = runs): 560 credits. The Free plan lists 1,000 credits a month, but it resets every day and "Going over: Waits for tomorrow" (Activepieces pricing). Our read: 560 runs averages under 20 a day, so Free may cope in a quiet month, but a launch day spike in signups would queue. Plus is $20 flat per month for 10,000 credits.

ToolUnits usedCheapest plan that fitsMonthly cost
Zapier660 tasksProfessional 750$19.99 (yearly) / $29.99 (monthly)
Pabbly Connect660 tasksStandard$19
Make1,220 creditsCore$9 (annual billing)
n8n Cloud560 executionsStarter20 EUR (billed annually)
Activepieces560 creditsFree or Plus$0 to $20
n8n or Activepieces self-hostedUnmeteredCommunity EditionYour server plus your time

Our read: at this volume the gap is only $10 to $20 a month, but it grows with steps. Add a fourth action to the Stripe automation (say, a thank-you email) and Zapier goes to 760 tasks, just past its 750 tier, while n8n and Activepieces do not change at all.

The 7 picks#

1. Make: cheapest hosted entry price#

Make's Free plan includes 1,000 credits a month with no time limit, and paid plans start at $9/month for 10,000 credits on annual billing (Make vs Zapier). Routers and error handler modules use no credits, and unused credits expire at the end of the term (Make pricing). We could not confirm Make's Free plan active scenario cap or minimum interval on Make's own pages today, so check before relying on Free.

Best for: visual builders who want branching logic and the lowest hosted bill.

2. n8n: best for multi-step workflows#

n8n Cloud Starter is 20 EUR/mo billed annually for 2.5K workflow executions with unlimited steps. Pro is 50 EUR/mo billed annually for 10K executions. All plans include unlimited users and workflows (n8n pricing).

Self-hosting is the big draw. n8n's docs call the Community Edition "the free edition" and say you can "self-host n8n for free with almost the complete feature set" (n8n docs). The catch is the licence. The Sustainable Use License says: "You may use or modify the software only for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use", and you may distribute it "only if you do so free of charge for non-commercial purposes" (n8n LICENSE.md).

Our read: running your own product's automations is squarely internal business use. Selling hosted n8n to clients or embedding it as a feature of your SaaS is where you need to read the licence carefully or talk to n8n.

Best for: technical makers with long workflows, or anyone who wants to self-host.

3. Activepieces: per-run billing with an MIT core#

Activepieces has a Free plan with unlimited flows and up to 5 users, Plus at $20 flat per month for 10,000 credits, and Team at $200 flat per month for 50,000 credits. Overage on paid plans is $0.007 per credit, and AI steps cost more than one credit (Activepieces pricing).

Its licensing is simpler than n8n's. "Activepieces' core is released as open source under the MIT license", while enterprise and cloud features are under a commercial licence, and using enterprise features on a self-hosted instance requires a paid licence (Activepieces docs).

Best for: makers who want n8n-style per-run pricing with a permissive open source core.

4. Pabbly Connect: the lifetime deal option#

Pabbly's Free plan offers 100 tasks a month with no card (Pabbly Connect). Its buy page lists Standard at $19/mo and Unlimited at $79/mo, and advertises "$349 for Lifetime Access", with an Ultimate one-time plan at $799 for 10,000 tasks a month (Pabbly buy page). Like Zapier, "Only action steps will consume your task count", and triggers and internal steps are free.

Pabbly's main pricing page showed us rupee prices, so yours may vary by location, and Pabbly says you cannot upgrade a one-time plan later. Our read: a lifetime plan pays off against Zapier's $239.88 a year in under two years, but only if the vendor and your workflows both stay put.

Best for: makers who hate subscriptions and run simple, stable automations.

5. IFTTT: cheapest for personal and simple triggers#

IFTTT's Free plan includes 1,000 credits a month and unlimited Applets with hourly polling. Pro is $5.49/mo or $65.88 billed annually for 20,000 credits with 5-minute polling. Pro+ is $13.99/mo for 100,000 credits (IFTTT plans). We could not confirm on that page how many credits each Applet run uses.

Best for: personal productivity and smart-home style triggers, not your Stripe pipeline.

6. Trigger.dev: for developers who would rather write code#

Trigger.dev is a code-first background jobs platform. Its Free plan includes $5 of compute credits a month and 20 concurrent runs; Hobby is $10/month with $10 of credits and 50 concurrent runs. Usage is per-second compute plus $0.25 per 10,000 runs. It is open source under Apache 2.0 and self-hostable (Trigger.dev pricing).

Best for: TypeScript developers whose "automation" is really backend logic.

7. Windmill: self-hosted scripts and flows#

Windmill's Community Edition is listed as "Free and Open-source" with unlimited executions, up to 50 users and 3 workspaces (Windmill pricing).

Best for: developers who want scripts, flows and internal tools on their own server.

Skip for new projects: Pipedream Workflows#

Pipedream's docs say: "Pipedream Workflows and String will shut down on March 31, 2027." They add that Workflows are "in maintenance mode" and "we're no longer accepting signups or subscriptions" (Pipedream docs). Its Connect product continues. If you are on Workflows now, plan your migration.

Self-hosting: what it really costs#

Self-hosted n8n, Activepieces or Windmill has no per-run bill, but it is not free. You pay for a server, and you become the person who applies updates, backs up the database and fixes a dead webhook at 2am. Our read: if an automation touches revenue (Stripe sales, failed payment emails), the cost of one silent outage can exceed a year of a hosted plan. Self-host the nice-to-haves first, and keep payment-critical flows on a hosted plan with uptime monitoring.

Our read: which to pick#

  • You want Zapier's ease for less: Make.
  • Your workflows have five or more steps: n8n Cloud or Activepieces.
  • You will run a server and want $0 software: n8n Community Edition for internal use, Activepieces if you prefer an MIT core.
  • You never want another subscription: a Pabbly lifetime plan, sized generously.
  • You are a developer: Trigger.dev or Windmill.
  • You only need Zapier for one or two simple zaps under 100 tasks: stay on Zapier Free.

Frequently asked questions#

What is the cheapest Zapier alternative for indie makers?#

For a hosted plan, Make's Core plan at $9/mo on annual billing for 10,000 credits is the lowest entry price among the tools we checked. If you are happy to run a server, n8n Community Edition and the open source Activepieces core are free to self-host, so you pay only for hosting and your time.

Is n8n free for commercial use?#

The self-hosted Community Edition is free, and n8n's Sustainable Use License lets you use or modify it for your own internal business purposes or for non-commercial or personal use. Running your own SaaS's automations is internal business use. Our read is that reselling n8n itself, or providing it to others for a fee, falls outside that grant, so read the licence before building a product on top of it.

What is the difference between tasks, credits and executions?#

Zapier and Pabbly count tasks, which are successful action steps; triggers are free. Make counts credits, where every module run uses one, including triggers and each polling check. n8n counts executions and Activepieces counts credits per run, so a ten-step workflow costs the same as a two-step one.

Is Pipedream shutting down?#

Pipedream Workflows is. Pipedream's docs say Workflows and String will shut down on March 31, 2027, that Workflows is in maintenance mode, and that it is no longer accepting signups or subscriptions. Pipedream Connect, its developer integration product, remains supported.

Is a Pabbly Connect lifetime deal worth it?#

It can be if your automations are simple and stable. Pabbly's buy page advertises $349 for lifetime access, and its Ultimate one-time plan is listed at $799 for 10,000 tasks a month. Pabbly also says you cannot upgrade a one-time plan later, so size it for where you expect to be, not where you are.
