Payment processor fees compared

This page lists the standard published fees of nine payment processors and merchants of record (MoRs) that indie developers often use. For each one we show the base percentage, the fixed fee per transaction, surcharges for international cards and currency conversion, whether the vendor acts as merchant of record, and payout terms. Every figure comes from the vendor's own pricing or help pages, which are linked in each row. Rates are for US-based sellers charging in USD and were last checked on 22 October 2026. Vendors can change their pricing at any time, so check the linked page before you decide.

Notes

  • Region: US. Figures are the standard published rates for a US-based seller charging in USD, as shown on each vendor's own pricing/help pages on 22 Oct 2026. Negotiated, volume, or custom pricing is not included.
  • Polar: organizations created on or after 27 May 2026 start on Starter (5% + 50¢). Paid plans carry a monthly fee: Pro $20/mo, Growth $100/mo, Scale $400/mo. Older organizations may stay on the Early Member rate (4% + 40¢, +0.5% on subscription payments).
  • Gumroad: direct-sale fee drops to 5% + $0.50 once paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000 (resets monthly).
  • Paddle: products under $10 may get bespoke pricing on request (per Paddle FAQ). Not included above.
  • Stripe also sells a separate merchant-of-record product. This row covers standard Stripe Payments only.
  • Stripe: the URL used is https://stripe.com/us/pricing. The generic https://stripe.com/pricing geo-serves regional rates (e.g. EUR pricing for European visitors), so it may not show the US figures above.
  • FastSpring: its pricing page publishes no rate (custom quote only), so its fee and payout cells read "custom quote only" or "not published".
  • "Not published" means the figure was not on the official pages checked. It does not mean the fee is zero.

Methodology

  • Sources: only each vendor's official pricing and help pages. No third-party sites.
  • Region: United States, USD pricing, standard self-serve plans. Volume, negotiated and enterprise pricing is excluded.
  • Base % and fixed fee are the default per-transaction rate. Surcharges (international cards, currency conversion, PayPal, subscriptions) are listed separately as each vendor publishes them.
  • MoR = the vendor is the legal seller to the customer and handles sales tax and VAT.
  • Where a figure was not stated on the official pages, the cell reads "not published". We did not estimate or infer missing figures.
  • Vendors whose pricing page does not publish a rate (for example, quote-only pricing) are listed as "custom quote only".
  • Last checked: 22 October 2026.
