Verdict: for indie makers selling software, subscriptions or licence-keyed apps, Lemon Squeezy is the cheaper choice on published fees: 5% + 50¢ per transaction against Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 on direct sales. Both act as merchant of record, so neither leaves you to register for sales tax around the world. The main caveat on Lemon Squeezy is its future: Stripe bought it in 2024, and the team's January 2026 update says it is building a migration path to Stripe Managed Payments, with no shutdown date.
This comparison uses only the fees each company publishes, checked on 6 Nov 2026. Where a vendor page does not state something, we say so rather than guess.

What each platform is#
Gumroad is a storefront and checkout for creators, with direct links, a profile page and Discover, its marketplace. It charges one rate on direct sales and a higher one when Discover finds the buyer. Since 1 January 2025, Gumroad says it acts as merchant of record and handles sales tax collection and remittance worldwide (Gumroad).
Lemon Squeezy is a checkout and billing platform aimed more at software sellers. It is also a merchant of record (Lemon Squeezy). Its headline rate is half of Gumroad's percentage, but it lists add-on fees for specific payment types and features in its fees documentation. Its fee schedule includes a surcharge for subscription payments, which tells you subscriptions are a core use case.

Worked fee examples on a $49 sale#
These examples apply only the published fee formulas above to a $49 product price. They ignore currency conversion, refunds, chargebacks and income tax.
A note on sales tax and VAT. We treat $49 as the price before tax. As merchant of record, each platform collects any sales tax or VAT due and sends it to the tax authorities, so that money is never your revenue. Neither page we checked states in plain terms whether the percentage fee is calculated on the pre-tax price or the tax-inclusive total, so check your first payout statement to see which base is used.
Gumroad#
Direct sale (your own link or profile):
- 10% of $49 = $4.90
- Plus $0.50 fixed
- Fee: $5.40 (11.0% of the price). You keep $43.60.
Discover marketplace sale:
- 30% of $49 = $14.70
- Fee: $14.70. You keep $34.30.
Gumroad's pricing page states the Discover rate as 30%. We have not added the $0.50 fixed fee on top because the page we checked lists 30% for Discover on its own.
Lemon Squeezy#
One-off sale to a US buyer paying by card:
- 5% of $49 = $2.45
- Plus 50¢ fixed
- Fee: $2.95 (6.0%). You keep $46.05.
One-off sale to a buyer outside the US:
- 5% + 1.5% = 6.5% of $49 = $3.185
- Plus 50¢ fixed = $3.685
- Fee: about $3.69 (7.5%). You keep about $45.31.
Sale to a buyer outside the US paying with PayPal:
- 5% + 1.5% + 1.5% = 8% of $49 = $3.92
- Plus 50¢ fixed
- Fee: $4.42 (9.0%). You keep $44.58.
$49 monthly subscription payment, US buyer:
- 5% + 0.5% = 5.5% of $49 = $2.695
- Plus 50¢ fixed = $3.195
- Fee: about $3.20 (6.5%) per payment. You keep about $45.80.
$49 monthly subscription payment, buyer outside the US:
- 5% + 1.5% + 0.5% = 7% of $49 = $3.43
- Plus 50¢ fixed
- Fee: $3.93 (8.0%) per payment. You keep $45.07.
US sale that came through an affiliate:
- 5% + 3% = 8% of $49 = $3.92, plus 50¢ = $4.42 in platform fees, before the commission you pay the affiliate.
Payout fee, if you are outside the US and paid out via Stripe: Lemon Squeezy lists a 1% payout fee. On the $46.05 from the first example that is about $0.46, leaving about $45.59 in your bank. US sellers paid out to a US bank via Stripe pay no payout fee (Lemon Squeezy fees).
What the maths says#
| $49 sale | Platform fee | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Gumroad, direct | $5.40 | $43.60 |
| Gumroad, Discover | $14.70 | $34.30 |
| Lemon Squeezy, US card | $2.95 | $46.05 |
| Lemon Squeezy, non-US card | $3.69 | $45.31 |
| Lemon Squeezy, non-US PayPal | $4.42 | $44.58 |
| Lemon Squeezy, US subscription payment | $3.20 | $45.80 |
| Lemon Squeezy, non-US subscription payment | $3.93 | $45.07 |
Even the most expensive Lemon Squeezy combination above costs less than a Gumroad direct sale at this price. The gap compounds on subscriptions: a $49 monthly plan billed through Lemon Squeezy to a US customer costs about $38.40 a year in fees (12 x $3.20), against $64.80 if every month cost Gumroad's direct rate of $5.40.
The fixed 50¢ matters more on cheap products. On a $5 item, Lemon Squeezy's base fee is 75¢ (15%) and Gumroad's direct fee is $1.00 (20%). You can test your own prices in our payment fee calculator.
The Lemon Squeezy and Stripe question#
Any 2026 comparison has to deal with Lemon Squeezy's ownership. In a 28 January 2026 post, Lemon Squeezy's JR Farr wrote that Stripe acquired the company in 2024, that the team is building Stripe Managed Payments, and that the goal is to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate. At the time of the post, Managed Payments supported merchants in 35+ countries, and the post mentions a waitlist (Lemon Squeezy).
What the post does not do is set a shutdown date for Lemon Squeezy. So the practical reading is:
- Lemon Squeezy still works and its fees are still published.
- If you start on it now, assume you will migrate to Stripe Managed Payments at some point.
- Keep customer emails, licence records and subscription data in your own database, so a migration is a data move rather than a rebuild.
Gumroad has no comparable migration notice on the pages we checked.
Alternatives worth pricing#
If neither fits, two merchant of record options sit close by:
- Paddle: 5% + 50¢ per checkout transaction, merchant of record, no monthly fees stated, and bespoke pricing for products under $10 (Paddle). On a $49 sale that is $2.95, the same base fee as Lemon Squeezy.
- Stripe Managed Payments: Stripe's FAQ says "Managed Payments adds 3.5% per successful transaction to your standard Stripe processing fees". Stripe is the merchant of record, tax is handled in 80+ countries, and there are no setup fees or monthly minimums (Stripe Managed Payments). With Stripe's US standard rate of 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards (Stripe), a $49 US card sale costs 6.4% of $49 ($3.136) plus 30¢, about $3.44. An international card adds 1.5%, taking it to about $4.17. Billing and local payment methods are priced separately.
Plain Stripe Payments is cheaper again, but you are the seller and must handle tax registration and filing yourself. Our list of Lemon Squeezy alternatives compares nine options in more depth.
Which should you choose?#
This is our editorial advice, based on the fees above.
Choose Gumroad if you are a creator selling to your own audience#
Gumroad suits writers, designers, educators and illustrators selling ebooks, courses, templates, presets or art. It is the simpler mental model: one rate on direct sales, a storefront you can share, and a marketplace that can occasionally surface your product to new buyers. If your sales volume is modest, the extra 5 percentage points against Lemon Squeezy may be worth paying for familiarity and Discover exposure.
If you pick Gumroad, send your audience to direct links rather than Discover, so you pay 10% + $0.50 rather than 30%.
Choose Lemon Squeezy if you sell SaaS, subscriptions or licence-keyed software#
For recurring revenue, the fee gap matters every month, and Lemon Squeezy's subscription surcharge is only 0.5%. It is the better fit for desktop apps, plugins, developer tools and small SaaS products.
Before you commit, confirm in each platform's documentation that licence key generation, validation and subscription management work the way your app needs. We did not re-check feature documentation for this post, only pricing.
Go in with an exit plan. Because Lemon Squeezy is steering users towards Stripe Managed Payments, some SaaS founders may prefer to start directly on Stripe Managed Payments or Paddle and avoid one migration.
A quick decision table#
| Your situation | Our pick |
|---|---|
| Creator selling ebooks, templates or courses to an existing audience | Gumroad (direct links) |
| You want marketplace discovery and accept a 30% cut on those sales | Gumroad |
| SaaS with monthly or annual subscriptions | Lemon Squeezy, Paddle or Stripe Managed Payments |
| Desktop app or plugin sold with licence keys | Lemon Squeezy or Paddle (check licence features) |
| You want to avoid a future migration | Paddle or Stripe Managed Payments |
| Most buyers are in your own country and you will handle tax | Plain Stripe |

Frequently asked questions#
Is Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy cheaper?#
On published fees, Lemon Squeezy is cheaper for direct sales. It charges 5% + 50¢ per transaction against Gumroad's 10% + $0.50. On a $49 sale to a US buyer that is $2.95 versus $5.40.
