Ahrefs Alternatives for Bootstrapped Founders (Free and Cheap)
Ahrefs Lite costs $129 a month, which is a lot for a product that has not found its first hundred customers. You can cover most early SEO work for $0 with Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs' own free plan and Screaming Frog's free crawler, then add one cheap paid tool for keyword research when you need it.

Key takeaways
- Ahrefs Lite is $129/mo and Ahrefs Starter is $29/mo on Ahrefs' USD pricing page; Ahrefs also has a free plan for sites you verify.
- Ahrefs Free (formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools) gives unlimited verified sites, 5,000 Site Audit crawl credits per project per month and up to 1,000 backlinks and keywords visible at once.
- Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools are free and show the real queries your site already appears for, which no third-party tool can match.
- The cheapest useful paid upgrades are Keywords Everywhere Bronze ($84 a year), Ahrefs Starter ($29/mo) and Ubersuggest Individual ($29/mo or a $290 lifetime plan).
- Our under-$50 stack is the free stack plus Ahrefs Starter and Keywords Everywhere Bronze, about $36 a month on published prices.

Short answer: Most bootstrapped founders do not need Ahrefs Lite at $129/mo. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs' own free plan and Screaming Frog's free crawler cover your own site for $0. When you need competitor and keyword research, add Ahrefs Starter ($29/mo), Keywords Everywhere ($84 a year) or Ubersuggest ($29/mo or $290 lifetime) instead of a full suite.
Every price and limit below comes from the vendor's own page, checked on 8 Nov 2026. Some vendors show prices in your local currency; where we could only see GBP, we say so. The stacks and picks are ours and are labelled.
TL;DR#
- Ahrefs itself has two cheap doors. Ahrefs Free covers sites you verify, and Starter is $29/mo, against $129/mo for Lite (Ahrefs pricing).
- Your own data is free. Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools show real queries and clicks; no paid tool has that data.
- Technical audits are free up to 500 URLs with Screaming Frog, which covers most early SaaS sites.
- Cheapest paid keyword data: Keywords Everywhere Bronze at $84 a year (pricing).
- Our $0 stack handles your own site. Our under-$50 stack adds competitor research for about $36 a month.

What Ahrefs costs today#
Ahrefs' pricing page, with USD selected, lists Lite at $129/mo, Standard at $249/mo and Advanced at $449/mo, with a banner for Starter at $29/mo. It says you can "Pay annually, save up to 17%" (Ahrefs pricing). Lite includes 5 non-verified projects, unlimited verified projects, 6 months of historical data, 750 tracked keywords, 100,000 crawl credits and 1,000 credits per user, with one user included.
Starter is the plan most solo founders should look at first. Ahrefs' own Starter plan post says: "On a Starter plan, you'll get 200 credits each month." Credits are used when you open reports in most core tools, while Site Audit and Rank Tracker have their own limits. The same post says Starter "can only be renewed monthly", that extra users and credits cannot be bought on it, and that "Features and limits on this plan may be changed without prior notice." That post dates from 2024, so check the plan page before you buy.
Ahrefs Free is the renamed Ahrefs Webmaster Tools. Its page says "Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now Ahrefs Free" and offers, for websites you verify: unlimited verified sites, Site Audit with 5,000 crawl credits per verified project per month, Site Explorer with up to 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 keywords visible at once, and Web Analytics up to 1M events per project (Ahrefs Free). The catch: it only covers sites you own. Looking at a competitor's backlinks needs a paid plan.
Our read: if you only want Ahrefs to understand your own site, Ahrefs Free plus Search Console already does that. You pay for Ahrefs when you want to look at other people's sites, which is the job in our competitor analysis guide.
The alternatives at a glance#
| Tool | Free tier | Cheapest paid plan | Best at |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search Console | Free service | None | Real Google queries, clicks, indexing for your site |
| Bing Webmaster Tools | Free | None | Bing data, keyword research, backlinks, site scan |
| Ahrefs Free | Unlimited verified sites, 5K audit credits per project per month | Starter $29/mo | Backlinks and audit for your own site |
| Ahrefs Starter | See Ahrefs Free | $29/mo (monthly only) | Light competitor and keyword lookups with Ahrefs data |
| Semrush | 10 reports per day, 1 demo project | SEO plan £113/mo, or £95.07/mo billed annually (GBP shown to us) | All-in-one suite, if you outgrow cheap tools |
| SE Ranking | 14-day trial, no card | Core £95/mo, £76/mo on annual (GBP shown to us) | Rank tracking with 2,000 keywords on the entry plan |
| Ubersuggest | 7-day trial on monthly plans | Individual $29/mo, $192/yr or $290 lifetime | Keyword ideas on a budget, one-off payment option |
| Serpstat | 7-day trial | Individual $50/mo | Keyword and audit volume per dollar |
| Mangools | 5 keyword lookups per 24 hours | Basic (price varies by country) | Simple keyword difficulty checks |
| Keywords Everywhere | No free plan on pricing page | Bronze $7/mo, billed $84 a year | Search volume inside Google results |
| Screaming Frog | 500 URLs per crawl | $279 per year | Technical audits |
We dropped tools we could not verify on the vendor's own page today, including Moz Pro, SpyFu, Wincher (its page did not show prices to us) and LowFruits. Semrush and SE Ranking served us GBP prices and ignored a USD currency parameter, so US prices may differ.
Free tools that cover your own site#
Google Search Console#
Google's help page says "Google Search Console is a free service offered by Google" (Google). It is the only place to see the actual queries people typed before landing on your pages, along with clicks, impressions and indexing problems.
Our read: for a site with some traffic, Search Console is better keyword research than any paid tool. Sort the performance report by impressions, find queries where you rank on page two, and improve the page that ranks. That is the cheapest SEO win there is, and it is covered in more depth in our SEO guide for bootstrapped startups.
Bing Webmaster Tools#
Bing describes its tool as "Free and full of powerful features" and lists keyword research ("Discover trending keywords, related search queries, and long-tail opportunities"), backlink insights for your site and competitors, a site scan for technical issues, and the option to "Import your site from Google Search Console" (Bing Webmaster Blog). Our read: the competitor backlink report is the part founders tend to miss. It is not Ahrefs' index, but it is free.
Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free version)#
The free download crawls up to 500 URLs; the paid licence removes the limit and costs $279 per year, with discounts from five licences (Screaming Frog pricing). It runs on your own machine and finds broken links, redirect chains, missing titles and duplicate meta descriptions.
Our read: a SaaS marketing site with a blog of under a few hundred posts fits inside 500 URLs. You will hit the limit once you have programmatic pages or a big docs site.
Cheap paid tools worth considering#
Keywords Everywhere: cheapest keyword volumes#
Keywords Everywhere is a browser extension that shows search volume and related keywords while you search. Plans are billed annually only: Bronze is $7/mo, billed $84 a year, for 100,000 credits a year, where "1 Credit = 1 Keyword". Silver is $14/mo ($168 a year) for 400,000 credits and 3 seats. Credits are valid for one year from purchase (Keywords Everywhere pricing).
Best for: checking volume on ideas you already have, without opening another app.
Ahrefs Starter: Ahrefs data without Ahrefs prices#
At $29/mo with 200 credits a month, Starter lets you run a few Site Explorer and Keywords Explorer lookups on competitors each week. It is month to month, so you can turn it on for a research sprint and cancel. Our read: 200 credits is enough for a focused founder doing a handful of competitor checks, not for an agency workflow.
Ubersuggest: the lifetime option#
Ubersuggest's pricing page lists Individual at $29 a month, $192 a year or $290 lifetime, with one user, one project, 150 searches per day, 125 tracked keywords per project and 1,000 page scans per project. Monthly plans have a 7-day free trial. Business is $49 a month or $490 lifetime with 7 projects and 300 searches per day. The page notes that it "serves localized pricing based on the visitor's region" (Ubersuggest pricing).
Illustrative arithmetic: the $290 lifetime plan equals about 10 months of the monthly plan, or about 18 months of the yearly plan. If you expect to keep doing SEO for two years or more, lifetime is the cheaper path, provided the product is still around.
Mangools: simple keyword difficulty#
KWFinder's free tier gives "5 lookups per 24 hours, 15 related and 5 competitor keywords per lookup for free" (KWFinder). Mangools' help centre says paid prices "depend on your country and on whether you pay monthly or annually", so check the plan page yourself. Its Basic plan includes 100 keyword lookups and 100 SERP lookups per 24 hours and 200 tracked keywords with weekly ranking updates (Mangools plans compared).
Serpstat: volume of searches per dollar#
Serpstat's Individual plan is $50/mo with a 7-day trial and a note that annual billing saves $228. It includes 5 projects, 100 searches per day, 10,000 keyword position checks and 30,000 pages to audit (Serpstat pricing). It sits at the top of the "cheap" range, so it makes sense when you would otherwise be combining two or three smaller tools.
Semrush and SE Ranking: when you outgrow cheap#
Both are full suites and priced like it. Semrush's free account allows 10 reports per day across its main tools and one demo project, and paid plans come with a seven-day trial; its entry SEO plan showed as £113 a month, or £95.07 a month billed annually, on the GBP page served to us (Semrush prices). SE Ranking's Core plan showed £95 and £76 a month next to an "Annually Save 20%" toggle, with 2,000 tracked keywords, 10 projects and a 14-day trial with no credit card (SE Ranking pricing).
Our read: these are good tools, but at these prices they compete with Ahrefs Lite, not with the cheap options. A trial is useful for a one-off deep dive on a market before you build.
Pick by job#
| Job | Free pick | Cheap paid pick |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword research for new posts | Search Console, Bing keyword research, Mangools free lookups | Keywords Everywhere Bronze or Ubersuggest Individual |
| Rank tracking | Search Console average position | SE Ranking Core (2,000 keywords) or Ubersuggest (125 keywords per project) |
| Your own backlinks | Ahrefs Free, Bing Webmaster Tools | Not needed |
| Competitor backlinks | Bing Webmaster Tools backlink insights | Ahrefs Starter |
| Technical audit | Screaming Frog free (500 URLs), Ahrefs Free Site Audit | Screaming Frog licence ($279 a year) |
This table is our editorial advice based on the published limits above.
The $0 stack (ours)#
- Google Search Console for queries, clicks and indexing.
- Bing Webmaster Tools, imported from Search Console, for a second data source, keyword ideas and a look at competitor links.
- Ahrefs Free for your backlink profile and a monthly audit.
- Screaming Frog free before each launch or redesign, to catch broken links and missing titles.
- Mangools free (5 lookups per 24 hours) and the Semrush free account (10 reports per day) for spot checks on keyword difficulty.
Cost: $0. This is enough for a founder publishing a few posts a month. If you are still deciding whether SEO is the right channel at all, our list of free marketing channels for bootstrapped makers puts it next to the alternatives.
The under-$50 stack (ours)#
Everything in the $0 stack, plus:
- Ahrefs Starter at $29/mo for competitor lookups.
- Keywords Everywhere Bronze at $84 a year, which is $7 a month.
Cost: about $36 a month on published prices. Swap Ahrefs Starter for Ubersuggest Individual ($29/mo) if you want tracked keywords and more searches per day rather than Ahrefs data, or buy the $290 lifetime plan once and drop the monthly line entirely.
What we would not do on a small budget: pay for two keyword databases at once. Pick one, learn it well, and let Search Console tell you what is actually working.
Frequently asked questions#
Is there a free version of Ahrefs?#
Yes. Ahrefs Webmaster Tools is now called Ahrefs Free. It covers websites you verify you own, with Site Audit (5,000 crawl credits per verified project per month), Site Explorer (up to 1,000 backlinks and 1,000 keywords visible at once) and Web Analytics. It does not let you research competitor sites; Ahrefs' page says that needs a paid subscription.
What is the cheapest Ahrefs plan?#
Ahrefs Starter, shown at $29/mo on Ahrefs' pricing page with USD selected. Ahrefs' Starter plan post says it includes 200 credits each month, can only be renewed monthly, and does not allow extra users or extra credits. The next plan up, Lite, is $129/mo.
What is the best free alternative to Ahrefs?#
For your own site, Google Search Console. Google calls it a free service, and it shows the actual queries, clicks and impressions your pages get in Google Search. Pair it with Bing Webmaster Tools, Ahrefs Free and Screaming Frog's free crawler (500 URLs) and you have keyword data, backlinks and a technical audit for $0.
Is Ubersuggest a good cheap Ahrefs alternative?#
It is one of the few SEO tools with a lifetime option. Ubersuggest's pricing page lists Individual at $29 a month, $192 a year or $290 lifetime, with 150 searches per day, one project and 125 tracked keywords. Its data is not the same depth as Ahrefs, but for keyword ideas on a single product site it covers a lot.
Do I need a paid SEO tool before I have customers?#
Usually not. Our read: before you have traffic, the expensive part of SEO is writing and shipping pages, not tooling. Start with the free stack, and pay for a keyword tool only when you are publishing every week and running out of ideas you can validate in free tools.
