Free error tracking and uptime monitoring tiers compared

This page lists the free plans of 10 error tracking, uptime monitoring and observability services that indie developers often use. For each one we show the free plan, its cap in the vendor's own unit (errors, events, monitors, check runs or GB), the check interval, seats and projects, data retention, commercial use, whether a card is needed, and any self-hosted option. Every figure comes from the vendor's own pages, which are linked in each row. Vendors count usage in different units, so the table keeps each vendor's own wording. Figures were last checked on 22 October 2026.

Notes

  • Region: US English pages. Figures are the published free-plan terms on each vendor's own pages on 22 Oct 2026. UptimeRobot's page showed prices in euros ("Free € 0 /month") when fetched.
  • "not stated" means the vendor's pages that were checked did not state the value. It does not mean "included", "not included", "allowed" or "not allowed".
  • All ten vendors publish a free plan, so no row is trial only. Highlight was a candidate but highlight.io now redirects to launchdarkly.com, so it was dropped and Healthchecks.io was added. Paid-plan trials are noted where the page shows them (Rollbar, BugSnag).
  • Caps keep each vendor's own unit and are not converted: errors (Sentry, Honeybadger), "exceptions" (Better Stack), "occurrences" (Rollbar), "events" (BugSnag), monitors (UptimeRobot, Checkly, Better Stack), "jobs" (Healthchecks.io), GB and compute (Axiom), active series, GB and test executions (Grafana Cloud).
  • Check interval reads "not stated" where the pages checked give no uptime or synthetic check frequency for the free plan. This includes error trackers whose free plan lists no uptime checks (Rollbar, BugSnag), data platforms (Axiom, Grafana Cloud), and Healthchecks.io, where jobs ping the service instead of being polled.
  • Commercial use is stated by one vendor only: UptimeRobot's terms say it "is available for any use, including commercial and business use", while its free card says "Good for hobby and non-profit projects." Better Stack labels its free plan "Free for personal projects". Where a vendor only describes who a plan is for, the cell reads "not stated" and quotes that description.
  • Self-host: Sentry, Grafana and Healthchecks.io offer self-hosted versions. Honeybadger lists "self-hosted deployments" as something to ask sales about, and BugSnag lists "On premises or SaaS deployment" on its top plan. "not stated" means the pages checked do not offer a self-hosted version.

Methodology

  • Sources: only each vendor's own pricing, docs and terms pages. No third-party sites.
  • Region: US English pages, standard self-serve plans.
  • Figures are quoted as the vendor writes them, including the vendor's own unit (errors, events, occurrences, monitors, check runs, GB). We did not convert, total or estimate any figure.
  • "Trial only" would mean the vendor publishes no free plan; all 10 vendors listed publish one.
  • Where a value was not stated on the vendor's pages, the cell reads "not stated". This does not mean "included", "not included", "allowed" or "not allowed".
  • Last checked: 22 October 2026.
